Neremyn Image here "At the moment of Creation, there was a sound so profound, that all that is, was, and ever will be was defined by it. Most never hear The Song, I've been lucky enough to witness a single Chord."
The Basics Name || Master Alchemist Neremyn, Son of Yslamin Nicknames || Neremyn, Maestro, Mr. Music Age || 27 Birthday || September 27th Species || Dark Elf, Zaran Gender || Male Alignment/Faction || Neutral Good, Zaran Empire Sexuality || hetero
The Appearance Face Claim || N/A
Height & Weight || 5'5'', 115 lbs.
Identifying Features || Right eye is cybernetic, replaced after a laboratory accident. Tends to fidget, a lot.
Overall || This fairly short individual sports the usual purple-ebony skin, pointed ears, and colourless hair of his race; all contrasted by his very colourful attire. His face is highly angular, with sharp chin and nose flanked on either side by slanted almond eyes, one a natural emerald colour and the other a dimly glowing silvery cybernetic replacement. His almost manic grin reveals well cared-for teeth seemingly made of silver. As one travels down, one finds a thin wiry frame that is almost constant motion as the individual shuffles and dances to music, whether heard or imagined. One would find the occasional burn mark or other small injury, likely all results of experiments gone wrong. Style-wise, Neremyn is a fan of colour, particularly favoring monochromatic getups that reflect his daily whim. When on official business though, his Uniform is a stately combination of Blacks, Blues, and Whites with a few golden accents. He keeps his hair tied back away from his face and ears.
The Personality Personal Strengths || Highly Intelligent, Adaptable, and generally optimistic
Personal Weaknesses || Socially awkward, mildly neurotic, recklessly inquisitive, impulsive
Goals || Neremyn Seeks understanding, believing that the universe can be understood through music and magic, the Elf searches for new sounds, new music, both literal and metaphorical. He wants to hear the ultimate song, the perfect chord.
Fears || Silence, Death, the possibility that what he seeks may not exist.
Overall || Neremyn is a man obsessed. His mind turns perpetually towards the metaphysical melody of his surroundings, the sound of existence given form by the vibrations of reality. He rarely, if ever, comes to a full stop, as his mind flits from thought to thought or doggedly pursues an answer. His Focus is razor sharp, but also tends to block out some very important things, like common sense, where the bathroom is, and what that person just said. His enthusiasm for his work is undeniable, but he struggles to put it in terms that others can understand, it being largely intuitive and obvious to him. Occasionally, he may run into something he can't wrap his head around, like the motivations/intentions of another, why the door won't push open, politics, cooking, or rap. When this happens, he tends to rapidly overthink things, sometimes leaving him hopelessly confused and just wanting to get back to what makes sense. Despite this, he absolutely loves puzzles, riddles, and the like. Overall, the fellow is a generally happy, slightly too intelligent for his own good, and curious individual who's so focused on his life's passion that he tends to forget things like whatever it is less musical people do.
The History Family Information || Yslamin, Mother, An accountant working for Corbin Mercantile, the Empire's largest conglomerate; Arvelin, Father, Deceased, Died in construction accident.
Homeworld || Midgard, a chilly Warren World undergoing transformation to make the surface habitable in the Forge System of the Empire's Core Sector; The planet's largest city, Valgustumine, is the system's academic capital.
History || Having been raised in the typical Zaran manner, Neremyn would've spent his youth among the extended family that was his neighborhood and gone to the youth academies. His father had died before he was born, having fallen victim to the hazards of construction in low orbit.
After graduating from basic education, the youth would go on to serve in a work-study program at the local artificer's academy, studying the principles behind some of the most essential technology in the empire, when he came upon inspiration. Always having been a fan of music, the novice artificer came to the realization that the entire universe functioned like a massive performance, where each part was a single note and they all came together to form rhythms, melodies, and refrains.
Following this eureka moment, the Artificer would drop out of the Artificer's academy and apply for the Imperial Academy of Alchemists, studying the secrets of the universe and eventually graduating at the top of his class. After this he would serve his mandatory time in the Imperial Alchemist Corps., further expanding his knowledge of Alchemy and becoming a highly skilled specialist in Quantum Resonance. During this time in the Alchemist Corps. he would suffer the injury that earned him his false eye, as a sample of Azadoazide Azide detonated, shattering it's containment and sending shards flying in all directions, including a particular elf's eye.
Following his service and entrance into the reserves, he'd go on to work amongst civilian scientists, lending his own expertise to the study of quantum mechanics and translating it into practical applications and eventually purchasing a set of hearing augmentations to further his pursuit of the perfect sound.
Other Information ||
The Verse-specific details Abilities || Alchemical Savant: Through a combination of synesthesia, mathematical genius, and a natural affinity for magic, Neremyn has become one of the rarest and elite individuals among Zaran Archanists, an already proportionally small group. Sounds have a distinct colour and mathematical feel, and vise versa. When he listens to music, he also "sees" it as well as understands intuitively the relationships between every individual vibration. When he performs calculations or reads mathematical formulae, he also "hears" them as his mind translates it into sound. All of this translation of sensory information into additional formats can lead to sensory overload, swings between being easily distracted and focusing to the point of obliviousness, and difficulty sleeping; however, his memory is extremely precise due to having numerous references for a given memory, his mathematical capabilities surpass even some computers in both speed and accuracy, and he has great musical talent. Doctors hypothesize this may have developed as a result of one or several minor brain injuries given that his abnormal capabilities were not present until later in life, long-term health effects are as yet unknown.
Due to these various combined effects, Neremyn is capable of performing the calculations required for transmutation as a completely internalized process and is capable of intuiting the most basic conversions in nearly any situation as his stamina allows. This does, however, cause problems, especially when trying to communicate information as it relates to these things. Afterall, how does one explain art or music to a person born blind and deaf?
Limited ESP: By using his magic as a sort of "hand", Neremyn is able to feel out the properties of an object within arm's reach, learning things like it's quantum resonance, and with further investigation the component elements and their proportions. This process takes minutes for all but the simplest objects (like a homogenous lump of metal, glass, simple crystaline objects, distilled water, etc.), and it is impossible for living things due to the rates at which they change. This is a low-stress application of magic, but continuous use will lead to headaches, mental fatigue, and eventually physical exhaustion. Disruption: A weaponized form of transmutation that simply applies a random resonance to an object, this has a tendency to result in a portion of the object around the point of contact going through a spontaneous state-transition, exploding, or simply being rearranged into something wrong. Very inefficient, but not requiring much mental exertion, two to three uses is usually all one can muster before mana depletion. Effects are similar to Inflict Wounds. Reconfiguration/fabrication: Proper transmutation, this can only be used on materials familiar to the user and converts them into something else familiar to the user. This could be used to pull the ground up to create cover, turn raw materials into a finished object, reshape something, make a shiv or other simple weapon, etc. Effects are similar to Fabricate, Stone Shape, Mold Earth, and the like. Neremyn is usually able to manage a similar number of transmutations as Disruptions, but larger scale or more intricate ones will take more energy. Energy Induction: A very simple, but limited ability that blurs the line between transmutation and evocation, this simply converts mana into heat, light, electricity, or motion. It requires contact with the object, but can be used to do things like Recharge electronics, heat something, throw something really hard, etc. Most can manage up to 500 Kj before needing time to recover. One major perk is that it can be used to turn oneself into a human loudspeaker or lamp, allowing one to listen to music or generate light even if one doesn't have any devices, this does however take a great deal of concentration. Note: current capacity means that he could fully recharge his pistol twice if willing to expend his entire pool.
[Note: getting injured or being subjected to extreme stimulus (like a flashbang) whilst in the middle of a drawn out or involved casting would cause problems, either a simple fizzle or possibly the spell going awry. Also, One should note that all these are pulling from the same pool. i.e. Disruption uses up around a third of reserves whilst the L-ESP uses a much smaller amount]
Sensory Cybernetics: These high-quality implants are powered by mana-taps and/or external power sources and capacitors that allow for a week of light usage or a a day or two of extensive use between charges. A week of passive charging with no usage will fully recharge the implants. The cybernetics tend to make the user more vulnerable to sensory overload unless they're brought down to natural sensitivities, making their usage in combat or other particularly stimulus rich areas to be ill-advised. Eye: UV, IR, VL, Variable Focus, HD. Ear Implants: Double's range of hearing in both directions, adjustable sensitivity. Increased sensitivity allows for passive or even active echolocation when coupled with vocalizations. These were installed behind and above the natural ears, adding to rather than replacing natural function.
Skills || Musical Talent (when you're obsessed with music, you're gonna git gud, probably Piano, Singing, and/or Violin), Scientific Knowledge (Focus on Quantum Mechanics, Calculus, Metaphysical Resonance, Chemistry, and Materials Sciences), Imperial Alchemist's Training (sidearms, first aid, teamwork, light armour)
Training || Musical Talent (Informal, dedicated practice), Scientific Knowledge (Formal, the Academies, reinforced by intuitive understanding), Imperial Alchemist's Training (Mandatory Military Service for Government Trained Alchemists)
Combat Strengths || This Individual is highly adept at battlefield manipulation, being capable of shaping matter that they understand and being able to study new materials if given enough time. If given time to prepare, they're far more formidable. His cybernetics would also provide advantages with observation.
Combat Weaknesses || He relies more on cover and speed for defense, being fairly vulnerable without advanced armour. If caught unawares or in an unfamiliar environment, he's at a distinct disadvantage. His cybernetics also render him vulnerable to extreme sensory stimulus when in use, meaning that such things can send him reeling as his brain struggles to process excessive input.
Additional Details || Being a Dark Elf of the Zaran Empire, his natural life-span is roughly 700-900 years, his natural senses are slightly better than peak human, and he's naturally quicker than the average human, however he's smaller, slimmer, and thus weaker. His Pigmentation makes it easier to hide in the dark, if he dresses darkly and covers his stark white hair.
Weapons || As a Part of the Imperial Reserve Forces, Neremyn is obligated to keep and maintain his basic equipment. It is standard issue, with the exception of the RRP-1 which is afforded to individuals of some importance.
Zaran Light Infantry Armour: Full Bodysuit Hydrostatic gel layer sandwiched between buckypaper Temperature control system (small backpack with a powersource, water pump, and temperature exchange system. Water is pumped through the suit under the gel layer to regulate heat) Full-body underwear, yer typical sportswear, draws water away from the skin and keeps shit comfy Piezoelectric nano-wires connect to the backpack to provide extra charge longevity as the wearer moves. Plating: 2-3 cm thick plates of Standard Composite arranged to protect the torso whilst not sacrificing mobility. The most basic form of Military-Grade Protection in the Empire, the LIA is capable of providing full protection from low-power kinetic weapons as well as radically improving survivability against intermediate kinetic weapons. Low-Grade energy weapons will generally find it to be highly resistant, but the armour was not designed with energy weapons in mind and will fail after repeated exposures as the gel boils away and the fabrics and plating sublimate. The suit does provide much protection from the elements, keeping it's wearer at a healthy temperature in environments ranging from -50C to 70C for up to 2 days on a single charge w/ significant activity. The Underwear is also quite comfortable, pulling sweat away from the skin and preventing chaffing.
Recoilless Radiant Pistol 1: RRP-1; Burst Energy: 5 kJ Rof: 60rpm Ammunition: Graphene Supercapacitor (50 Firings before recharge) The RRP-1 is the product of Zaran Research into Personal Directed Energy Weapon Systems, and is on the cutting edge of Imperial research. It is a hand-held laser projector with an energy output nearing that of the wrist-crushing Magnetic Hand Cannon without any recoil. It's lack of physical ammunition also makes it's further development highly desirable due to greater independence from supply lines and cost effectiveness. It's supercapacitor unit isn't removable, meaning that reloading isn't an option when the weapon runs dry and plugging it into a charging device is the only option; needless to say, this is a feature that will be improved on in the future. This uncommon weapon is usually only found in the hands of particularly valuable but not particularly hardy soldiers, providing a potent sidearm for emergencies without risking the user.
Galvanic Dagger: Blade Length: 35 cm, 2 Edges, Hilt Length: 15cm The weapon's power source is capable of generating up to 30 watts consistently (11.25 being required for maximum effectiveness discharge for human fatality), and has capacitors that may be charged for greater discharges (up to 1 kj) Blade Composition: Titanium-Graphene Composite with Lonsdaleite Laminate, New Blades are nearly Monomolecular, and old ones are easily replaced. Strikes should be aimed to keep the target's vitals between the point of contact and the point of grounding, and non-grounded targets are mostly unaffected by the discharge. Note: even if the target is unaffected by the shock, it's still getting stabbed/slashed, if at first it doesn't die, slash slash again.
Ship || nothing yet, probably nothing until RP makes it make sense Current Story || The Emperor has announced the latest results of Operation Voyager, and things are sounding interesting enough to draw the Alchemist's attention. He anticipates actual proper contact with these "spurfolk", hopefully peaceful since he'd rather not go to war.
The Roleplayer Pen Name || Telaros, Zarus, Valerian, Captain Neckbeard of the S.S. Fedora, Jaques, Seeker, Riftwalker, Johann, John, Neremyn any of these will work just fine Age || 20 Other Characters here on Monomachiarum || Lore Seeker, Valerian Al'Aetherum Roleplay Sample || Within the Container sat one of the most dangerous conventional materials known to the Empire: Azadoazide azide, something so volatile that it literally explodes with zero measurable disturbance. The Dark Elf sat there, hands on either side of the container, as he reached out with the metaphysical, trying to feel out the properties of the chaotic chemical without physically disturbing it. A low angry buzzing, volatile, dangerous. The probability of spontaneous decay was rapidly increasing as his consciousness brushed across it's discordant song, it rising in a thunderous swell as the Elf's eyes flew open in surprise only to be met with the container blossoming into a shrapnel filled inferno. ... Voices through water, a red-hot nail driven through his skull and fire through the right side of his face. Neremyn could feel hot fluid flowing from his face, and couldn't smell or taste anything but Iron, but he felt fantastic! He had witnessed something unprecedented, a material reacting to the one method of measurement thought to be immune to the Observer Effect. "Quick, get a notebook! I'll dictate my notes whilst we wait for aid! Anything to keep my mind off the pain!" "Alchemist, come with us, your face is nigh ruined-" "Yes Yes, but that isn't as important! Can't change that right now. Get a notebook!" The world fades to a featureless haze of red as the pain overwhelms him. ... "What in the Emperor's Name were you doing? We couldn't save your eye, but scarring over the rest of your face should be minimal." "Azadoazide Azide" "What?" "Think ONC but more volatile than an atom of ununoctium sitting in a temporal-acceleration chamber, sounds like a swarm of angry bees crossed with the roar of a couple dozen Rotary Pilums... I poked it with my brain." "..." "This would be an excellent opportunity to expend some of my funds to acquire an augmetic eye!" "You will do nothing of the sort until after you recover fully, Neremyn." ... The world was filled with more colour than ever before, Purpler Purples than the Purplest, Redder Reds than the Reddest. People glowed subtly, and even the plainest flowers were brilliant explosions of colour. The Alchemist sat there paralyzed as his brain struggled to process all the incoming information from his metallic right eye, a splitting headache quickly forming as he struggled to re-activate the safeguards and dull the world back to sanity-preserving levels. He rubs his temples as he tries to comprehend what he just saw and knew he could see again, it was seductively beautiful, but he couldn't handle it yet. Diving headfirst into the deep-end wouldn't be possible this time. Anything Else || Finalized and ready for review.
