FMV Prospector VII, Zaran Civilian Exploration Liner, Unexplored Stellar Cluster near Sangheili Space, Unexplored Star System, Outer Fringe.
Lead Expeditionary Foreman Alan Merwic looked over the report his secretary had handed him, they'd picked a random star out of this cluster to survey first, ruling out the black hole and couple neutron stars due to the hazards they pose. All ships nominal, both the factory ships were fine, the cargo hauler loaded with Sprites had a minor issue with a loader on the fritz but the parts would be easily replaced. His escort ships seemed fine as well, the Corporate Military escort was all green from the Heavy Frigate to the half dozen PEVs and Drider, but he couldn't be sure about the Sangheili "Stormcutter" that was serving as liason and escort. He had to simply assume that everything was fine, he'd been told to avoid annoying the customers. No report on Mercenaries yet but he wasn't worried, they'd provided rendezvous coordinates to the bounty-hunter's guild, and they were planning to be out here for a while.
"Stevens, warm up the scanners, I want a full-spectrum sweep of the system. EM, Gravimetrics, Magnetic Resonance, the works. The Customers are paying us for results, get us some ore."
Identifying planets always came first, anything too big would be ruled out since those would just be gasballs, Super-terrestrial worlds would be a pain, but automated strip-mining was more than viable with good enough G-Drives for the shuttles. The ideal would be some Cthonic worlds, dense asteroid fields, sundered planets, etc. the more and easier the ore was to get the more the company and by extension he was getting paid.
Alan's brow furrowed as he listened to the report, this system was a bust, not even a full rocky body on scanners. That's just how things went sometimes, he looked at is secretary and shrugged.
"Calculate a jump to the densest region of the belt, I want us coming out close but not inside, then we'll begin a counter-spin sweep with the Sprites in full coverage formation. Tag any metal-rich objects with beacons, we can come back and do core sampling after we sweep the belt."
He looked at his watch, ETA to actually get to the belt was about a half hour, and most of that was just preparing for the jump, they weren't taking chances at a mishap. He looked at the console providing a readout on the sangheili vessel, he'd heard that their FTL could hit the ass of a gnat from across a system with less than a minute of preparation, he wouldn't have to work a day in the rest of his life if he managed to secure that for the empire, maybe the customers would be generous if he went the extra mile, maybe he was being overly fanciful. One thing was certain, he was gonna be out here until he found good deposits.
"Also, leave a beacon for any mercenaries that join the party, leave a message telling them where we went, we'll come back and reprogram it when we leave for the next system."
The Foreman slumped back in his chair with a groan. Nothing. Those carbonaceous asteroids would be quite useful for imperial foundries, but they were too far from home to be viable, and the sangheili wanted heavy elements, i.e. metals.
"Don't bother with core samples, this system is barren, lets double back to the beacon we placed on the fringe then make for the next system after reprograming it."
He looked over the list of nearby stars. A handful of binaries, mostly yellow and smaller. Should be ideal for finding at least one of worth, hell maybe even a nominally habitable world, but his current luck told him that was unlikely. He looked at the astrogeologist a couple seats over.
"Hey, why don't you take a gander at the possible destinations, maybe you'll have better luck."
The dwarf looked at him and then the list of stars, rubbing his beard. After several long minutes he nodded with a grunt, pointing at the binary system with an M and K class pair.
"That un's most like tha home system, Babel's a treasure trove, maybe a bit o her luck'll rub off on this pair here."
"You heard the man, start the calculations and coordinate with the flotilla. I want us in transit before the nightshift, then we've got a couple days to relax en route."
Jump completed without issue. Multiple planetary bodies located, none habitable. Large carbonaceous asteroid belt, multiple metal rich sources detected within it.
Findings: Roll 1: Multiple Iron/Nickel Asteroids. Roll 2: Carbonaceuous asteroids. Roll 3: Planetary system (4 rocky planets, not yet surveyed), asteroid belt with multiple Iron/Nickel metallic bodies detected.
"ALAN, we struck paydirt, get your ass to the bridge, we have 4 airless rocks."
The Foreman smacked his head on his berth as he jerked up, cursing he pulled on some pants and a shirt and shuffled to the bridge, blinking.
"Durk, some tea please, strong enough to kill an orc."
He looked at the readout, rubbing the back of his head. Grumbling, he reached for the steaming mug his secretary brought him and stuck a finger in. Burning hot, perfect. A bit more awake from the pain in his finger, he set the mug down to cool to safety while planning.
"Calculate a jump for the innermost rock, that one is the most likely to be metal-rich, I want the Sprite crews ready for a planetary sweep, if there's any deposits close to the surface I want them found and tagged with beacons. Hop to it people, and tell our customers that Forge mercantile also offers mineral extraction and refinement services for a reasonable price, I want to get first consideration when the contracts for mining get passed out."
Jump completed without issue. First planetary body contains mostly silica, oxygen and carbon. Trace deposits of heavier Iron, Nickel and Aluminum detected alongside negligible traces of other heavier elements.
Findings: Roll 1: Multiple Iron/Nickel Asteroids. Roll 2: Carbonaceuous asteroids. Roll 3: Planetary system (4 rocky planets, 1 Surveyed), asteroid belt with multiple Iron/Nickel metallic bodies detected.
"A bit disappointing, but not a writeoff yet. I want some drilling teams dirtside to take some samples from the deposits we did find, they have a couple days to work with, get as deep as they can. I bet you credits to crackers that that rock has a real juicy core, but we don't have the gear to get that deep right now. Maybe we could pitch a core drilling outpost to them after this, would be good money for us."
Alan stood and made for his office, the bridge crew could be trusted to organize the drilling parties, he needed to brainstorm some offers to make the Sangheili once this survey expedition was done. The bonus he would get for securing mining contracts and special considerations would have him sitting very pretty for a long time. After the drilling teams got back he'd just repeat the same process on the next few rocks, assuming that nothing extraordinary was found that is. Easy work, easy pay, all that was a pain was how damn long these expeditions took. At least they had those "Galactic Railways" people to help with the long haul.
Second planetary body contains mostly silicates and other nonmetals, traces of Nickel and Iron. Third planetary body contains traces of Nickel, Iron, Aluminum and negligible heavy metals. Fourth planetary body differs, significantly smaller in diameter than its siblings but containing abundant deposits of Iron, Nickel, Aluminum, Tungsten and isolated deposits of additional heavy and rare earth metals such as Vanadium, Lithium, Cadmium and Chromium.
Findings: Roll 1: Multiple Iron/Nickel Asteroids. Roll 2: Carbonaceuous asteroids. Roll 3: Planetary system (4 rocky planets, 4 Surveyed), asteroid belt with multiple Iron/Nickel metallic bodies detected.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we have Paydirt. Tag this world with some beacons saying that it belongs to the Sangheili Nationstates and was Surveyed by Forge Mercantile. Lets head to the next system. Bjorn, you beautiful bearded bastard, you're my good luck charm, your bonus'll be doubled if you can pick another good system."
"Yer kiddin... no, no yer not... well, suppose we kin try this 'ere yellow star, bit hotter, coulda concentrated tha heavier elements better in tha closer rocks. Hear that tha terrans call one of those home, after that, maybe tha white dwarf over yonder, but we could be out 'ere fer ages."
Merwic nodded, they had found a highly valuable world already, their pay was assured, anything further would be a bonus. He'd call it after a couple more systems, it wouldn't do to be wandering out here for several months, they all had lives back home.
"Alright people, drop another beacon to tell any mercs where we're heading, I don't think any of them will be coming, but it wouldn't do to have them wandering around trying to find us in vain. Send a QEC message back to Corporate, we might have a lucrative opportunity for a mining outpost if they can convince our customers. I want us in translight tonight."
Jump completed without issue. Seven planetary bodies and two asteroid belts detected. Five of the planets are rocky bodies with two primordial/primitive garden worlds, with two additional gas giants beyond the asteroid belt.
Findings: Roll 1: Multiple Iron/Nickel Asteroids. Roll 2: Carbonaceuous asteroids. Roll 3: Planetary system (4 rocky planets, 4 Surveyed), asteroid belt with multiple Iron/Nickel metallic bodies detected. Roll 4: Planetary system. (3 rocky planets, 2 primordial garden worlds, 2 gas giants, none surveyed), 2 asteroid belts.
Two life-bearing worlds, three other rocks, and who knows how many moons around the gas giants, this system would have quickly become a focus for colonial efforts if it were closer to home, but at least He and his crew would be getting some great pay for this find.
"Take us to the outer giant, I want scans, samples, and beacons down on any moons they have, even if they're just iceballs they'll still be useful for possible colonies. I also want more detailed gravimetric readings and a full spectral analysis of the giant's atmosphere, if its' gravity well is shallow enough it could be ideal for fuel harvesting."
Alan looked over to Bjorn with a grin as he pulled a bottle of wine from the cooler he kept for occasions like this, the astrogeologist had more than earned his bonus and then some. Surveying wasn't glamourous, but it sure as hell felt good when you hit the jackpot like this. Only thing better he could think of would be finding a primitive civilization, two habitable and life-bearing worlds in the same system was incredibly rare without terraforming.
First planetary body contains largely silicates, Iron, Nickel and Aluminum. Second planetary body scans similarly with trace deposits of rare earth and heavy metals. Third planetary body is composed mostly of silicates, Iron, Nickel, Aluminum and trace heavy metals in addition to being a habitable world with an oxygen/nitogen atmosphere and mostly terrestrial surface pockmarked by inland seas, albeit gravity close to 2g. Fourth planetary body is likewise a habitable world, slightly colder than the third planet but with an oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere atmosphere with gravity close to 1.2g. Despite being covered in a sparse biosphere with no visible oceans scans detect subsurface oceans, along with notable deposits of Iron, Nickel, Aluminum, rare earth metals and heavy metals.
The asteroid belt beyond the fourth planet is largely metallic, with dense concentrations of Iron/Nickel asteroids replete with other trace metals.
The first coreward gas giant is small but stable, boasting only a dozen captured moons of ice.
The next asteroid belt is largely unremarkable, hosting only carbonaceous asteroids when scanned.
The second gas giant is much larger than the first, having captured multiple moons the size of smaller terrestrial planets. Holding onto thick atmospheres of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and Noble gasses, these moons scan as rich in multiple metals, essentially created from captured asteroids in the gas giant's orbits during the system's formation.
The last planet in the system is a small silicate rock, largely composed of volatiles and frozen carbon dioxide.
Findings: Roll 1: Multiple Iron/Nickel Asteroids. Roll 2: Carbonaceuous asteroids. Roll 3: Planetary system (4 rocky planets, 4 Surveyed), asteroid belt with multiple Iron/Nickel metallic bodies detected. Roll 4: Planetary system. (3 rocky planets, 2 primordial garden worlds, 2 gas giants, all surveyed), 2 asteroid belts.
Lead Expeditionary Foreman Alan Merwic looked over the report his had handed him, it was beautiful, he'd be able to retire early if he wanted, the customers would be very pleased with his findings, but he wasn't done yet. Those habitable worlds needed some further investigation. The Super-terrestrial world wouldn't be suitable for imperial habitation, but he wasn't sure if the sangheili were partial to higher gravity fields or not, all he knew was that they had weird jaws and extremely advanced technology.
"I want biological samples from those worlds, I want maximum quarantine measures in place to make sure nothing nasty hitches a ride, take no chances, send only Revenant crew dirtside and have them baked on return to incinerate any unwanted passengers, they will be offered large bonuses as compensation. I also want the same measures for when they're heading out, sterilize everything."
He looked over at the stormcutter, they hadn't needed to make any conversation beyond the most basic exchanging coordinates and flight-plans, which was fine by him. They were military escort, not buddies, and he was thankful for the fact that they weren't actually needed during this excursion.
"Stevens, bring us to the high-g world, may as well do the more bothersome one first. We grab a few samples from either rock and then we get our asses back home, this is one hell of a find and I want my pay."
