May 2023 It's been hectic this last year, but we are alive and celebrating our fifth year of adventure and tales. A lot has been worked on to help make the Monoverse one that everyone can enjoy and explore their story while becoming a part of the greater cosmos. All of you, new and long time players, stay safe, and see you in the Sea of Stars!
They got points for being attentive, at least. While they likely hadn't been expecting the door to open the ten Kromus in the room were quick to take note of the disturbance and spin on it. Frankly it was only their initial confusion and the delay between them noticing the door and beginning to give orders that gave Vincent the time he'd needed - having already been moving from the second the door was open the Spartan managed to clear it by several long meters by the time the prototype soldiers began opening fire on the aperture. Ice Troopers, if it weren't obvious enough. Vincent recalled the four variants of beam prototypes mentioned in the mission briefing well enough, and while the information pulled from the Orpheon had been sparse regarding the technical specifications of the technologies themselves... he'd been among the clean up crews on the Anvil and seen the damage done to a good number of the Jiralhanae corpses on board. Enough to know that even MJOLNIR would only offer a limited degree of protection against that sort of firepower, although Vincent admitted a certain degree of curiosity regarding how the ice beam might have interacted with the armor's energy shielding.
No. That was dangerous thinking, and at least for the moment curiosity would have to take a backseat. Tests could be done later when the operation was over and with the models that DAW would no doubt recover in the aftermath. The job was what mattered now, the here and now.
As the first and second volleys of ice hit the doorframe and the wall around it, several passing through the opening, Vincent quickly but quietly kept moving, sweeping wide along the edge of the room to place himself first off to the far edge of the Kromus troopers' formation and then around it entirely. Slow, cautious steps backwards from the Kromus kept the group moving but in their care it would ironically not be fast enough - and to both Amanda's and Heidi's credit the Spartans on the other side of the door would remain still and nonreactive, giving no indication that there was anyone right there even as energy weapon fire continued to hammer the wall their backs were to. Focusing for a moment on the TEAMCOMM as Vincent finally reached a position behind the Kromus formation, the Spartan would ping Amanda's icon twice yellow - from which an answering yellow dot would blink.
What happened next would all occur near instantaneously. Another handful of steps would place Vincent behind the specially armored Kromus towards the back of the formation, one of the two that had been issuing orders - and as he rose from a walking crouch to a standing position, still cloaked, Vincent would ping Amanda's TEAMCOMM green.
At the same moment hers responded in kind a gloved hand would appear through the doorway for all of the briefest instances, followed by the clink of metal on stone as a small white cylinder with writing on it bounced once off the floor before exploding with blinding force and sound With Vincent's visor correcting for the sudden increase in light as he reached over the shoulder of the taller creature while simultaneously bringing an armored boot down on the back of its leg to lower it, intending to place a hand over the Kromus commander's mandibles with force and squeezing to try and crush the bone and muscle - silencing it - as his combat knife was drawn and brought down from behind to hopefully sever the spine in its neck.
The blinding flash caused six of the ten Kromus to stumble, one of the commanding troopers stepping right back into Vincent's waiting grip. A series of snaps and crunching carapace would resonate in the air for the four that managed to shake off the effects of the flashbang; the other commando, two plasma troopers, and an ice trooper. They all turned toward their now stiffened compatriot, noticing that something unseeable had just brought the commando pirate to its knees. Seconds later, its jaw collapsed inward and a meaty crunch could be heard as the invisible knife drove deep into its spine and severed the nerves and tendons.
There was a bellow from the second commando, and both plasma Troopers turned to aim where their clearly now good as dead fellow was still dangling. Heat shimmer rose from the barrels of their arm-grafted cannons an instant before raging red beams of intense heated plasma began to expel from the openings. The undeterred ice Troopers gave a snarl as it raised its own weapon and unleashed a barrage at not only the disabled commando, but the ground as well, spreading ice wherever the cold plasmic shards impacted.
Whatever was said for Kromus cohesion, they did not let a captive comrade disway their efforts to blitz an unsneen enemy.
One down, nine to go, and as the flashbang went off and left the majority of the remaining troopers deaf and disoriented Vincent could feel the body go limp in his grip. The remaining troopers that kept their wits, however, were just as fast to turn on the disruption as they had been the door... and just as quick to open fire. Evidently without care for their technically still alive commander - while Vincent had severed the thing's spine with a fairly clean cut he had left the head largely intact, meaning that the creature was still in there somewhere. At least until the supply of blood and oxygen to the brain ran out. If it was any consolation at all, though, that meant the commando was unable to feel the multiple plasma shots that were now scorching off chunks of his suit as Vincent used the larger creature's armored body as cover, heat bleeding over and causing his camouflaged silhouette to flicker as his shields briefly flared from the onslaught.
Stepping off of the leg he'd stomped and allowing the Kromus' bulk to lean back against him, the knife would remain in the creature to steady it as Vincent began walking slowly backward to try and distance himself from some of the incoming fire and freezing chunks of floor. His other hand, however, would not remain idle, releasing the Kromus' mangled mandibles to drop down to his hip and draw the MR-1 from its magnetic holster. Powering the sidearm on, the firearm would be kept at subsonic to ensure it remained practically silent while firing - and while still using the dying commando as a shield Vincent would extend his right hand holding the weapon out from under the Pirate's arm, linking the weapon's smart scope to his HUD and aiming the gun at the next commando's throat, a nearly impossible target to miss this close in and at a 2x magnification as the Spartan pulled the trigger.
As the combat capable Kromus turned their attention away from the doorway, however, a veritable explosion of movement would follow as a brown armored mass exploded from cover to sprint across the open ground now that it was no longer being peppered with fire. EVA-8 shotgun in hand, Amanda would close the distance in the blink of an eye - in her haste the lash of the shotgun's butt would narrowly miss the back of one of the Plasma Troopers, although the same could likely not be said for the following bone rattling cough as she righted the weapon and fired at almost point blank range, aiming for the trooper's center of mass. The door clear behind her, the remaining three Spartans would lean through it from either side, careful not to block each other's lines of fire as they took aim with their weapons and unleashed a volley of armor piercing fire with every intent of testing the elemental shielding on the disoriented Beam Troopers.
Even as there was a collective screech from the various Pirate troopers, the plasma trooper that was shot by Amanda would stumble from the sheer kinetic forces that even its shielding couldn't fully absorb. Its mandibles chittered as it took a stabilizing step, bracing its right arm and the grafted plasma projector, then spun as fast as a blink to spray molten red flares back at his assailant.
And even as the remaining Qymor commando would bark an order, there was but a flicker just millimeters from his chitin carapace as something penetrated its personal shielding. The field generator on its belt crackled and sparked, revealing the device had shorted out even as the commando gurgled from the hole left in its throat.
And as the stunned troopers slowly regained their senses, their shielding units were flaring with flickers of light forms as bullets impacted against the ethereal barriers. At the same time, the active ice trooper snarled and turned its freeze projector toward the intruders, firing blasts of hyper cold plasma toward them like a shotgun.
