“Avoid the tower, good plan. Well then, let’s get to this armory as quickly- and carefully- as possible. Take point, but try not to run too far ahead.. we don’t know what else might be hiding down here.” Eresh said as he reluctantly motioned her forward.
“Hopefully this blade proves to be a bit more effective- I didn’t bring much in the way of explosive weaponry.”
He then sighed “But hopefully, we won’t run into anything that can’t be convinced to leave us be with a few stabbings and energy bolts.”
There was the echo of their armored feet crunching against the loose gravel and dirt of the cavern floor, lights mounted into the rock ceilings glowing steadily as the pair progressed down the tunnel. Smaller fauna would scatter into hiding as they passed through, having clearly come to understand by this point that two-legged humanoids meant something to avoid.
The tunnel that led to the area designated at the armory would wrap around and upward, leading to what was eventually revealed by the map to in fact be the upper section of the Tower. Warnings marked sections of the map deep inside the structure, while the armory was located toward the top, with notations on something regarding research into "Aeion technologies" and a cryogenics lab in the middle section.
And just a floor beneath that was the sections noted as containing a number of the aberrant metroid mutations…
As the pair wound their way up this “Tower”, the tall avian would turn to watch their back for a few moments, gradually walking backwards every time he detected motion or heard something scamper about behind them.. blade held rather casually in one taloned hand- though he was prepared to have it at the ready at any moment.
“How much further, Ha’chidari? Any road blocks that we should be looking out for?” He asked.. turning back to keep pace with Samus as she continued to stride forward.
As they approached the upper entrance of the Tower, which the map data said led into the armory, Samus should her head. She wasn't sure what they could run into, but hopefully the metroid aberrations were not among those things. "According to what my suit's AIs have decrypted, the Gamma and Zetas are being kept in carved out containment caverns in the lower subterranean chambers, a mid tier of the tower just above the geothermal power plant."
Whose brilliant idea was *that*, she had to wonder. If the metroids got loose and assaulted the geothermal plant under the tower, not only would the reactor be at risk of blowing, but that risked them getting loose to other connected areas. Had they been working in such precarious conditions that the The'náu had not been given time to properly contain these things? More so, all the encrypted data in the main servers that was still compiling suggested that they had something to hide even from other Chozo. But why?
And then her blue-green eyes narrowed as they approached the entry door of the upper tower. She triggered her cannon into wave beam configuration, readying herself for the inevitable confrontations just ahead. "Eresh, when we get out of here, I need to find out where the hell my dad and then Tho'ha elders are, and find out from those ancient feather bags what the hell was actually going on here. Because this is far more than containment and elimination of a hyperparasite species that all this points to…"
The door hissed at her touch, gave a thump, then irised open. It was quiet, dark inside. And all but telling them to enter.
Eresh would give a small collection of words that sounded suspiciously like a number of particularly colorful curse words as he took in the implications of what she said regarding the containment caverns. “I suggest we don’t interfere with the quarantine unless we absolutely have to, then. I don’t know if I can save you if we have to take on several of these things at a time.” He said as he gently thumped his free hand on her shoulder in an attempt to help her relax a bit. Though he attempted to bring a bit of levity, truth be told he as just as agitated as she was. The sense of danger was.. pervasive.
And once the door opened and she made her intentions clear on what they were going to do next once the mission as accomplished, he gave a short chuff of acknowledgment.
“I have no complaints on that regard. Still, one thing at a time Samus: we still have to get out of here before we can try our hand at being detectives.” He said as he readjusted his grip on the hilt of his sword. “Now let’s see what sort of interesting tools our cousins sequestered in this place.”
A cautious step through the four meter wide frame as Samus carefully swept the barrel of her cannon back and forth. Neurosynamptic sensors in her armor picked up her focused thoughts and shifted her visual interface to infrared, giving her a far better look at the dark interior of the Tower entry. The green trim lines of her suit stood out and illuminated the room as she stepped inside, purple glowing from her cannon's own exhaust seams as it maintained frequency wave beam configuration.
Faint thumps could be heard as she stepped across the metal floor of the Tower interior, infrared visor picking up what looked like traces of of something that had recently been dragged *into* the Tower, judging from the dimly glowing trail on the infrared spectrum. "Something tells me that the seals on this place aren't as secure as intended."
And then a distant roar could be heard. A screeching sound, deep from in the halls of the building. Somehow familiar to the young woman, yet alien all the same. Enough, however, for her to switch her cannon into missile configuration. "That would be the something."
Eresh would step in after her, his red lenses gleaming faintly from the lights on her suit.. the more subdued light from his own armor’s shoulders adding to the kaleidoscope. When he caught sight of the signs - and moreover heard the creature shrieking his blade would then be held aloft and at the ready. All that came from him was an almost rueful:
A strange silence came over the halls of the tower as the pair continued inward. The roar that had moments before echoed in the hollow chambers had gone quiet, as if it was no more. And yet, as the pair would make their way into the armory section of the Tower, there would be thumps that reverberated through the floors from the upper levels. Distant scratching sounds, like keratin against metal. And then all went silent again.
Seconds of quiet stretched into minutes. The pair would move forward again, with Samus using the basic map data obtained from the main lab's computers as their guide. However, what would bother her was that the area indicated as the storage for the prototypes kept here…was in the upper levels. The same area that the thumps and roars had come from.
And then as they reached the upper floors via a series of ladders, there was a deafening thud from the ceiling.
Silence. Darkness.
And then something dripped down to the bare metal floor and emanated a low sizzling sound, like acid. Another drip, then another as the sound of acid eroding the metal floor would intensify, gathering in magnitude as more steady drips from an expanding stain and hole would increase, until there was a snarl and a meaty thud as a large form landed several meters ahead of them.
A low hiss escaped the circular fang lined maw at the front end of the elongated head. Its back was covered in green exoskeletal plates, long forward limbs steadying it as the creature rose to a quadrupedal stance that allowed it to rise up as tall as Eresh was on his own two feet. Over six meters long with a thick tail that curled behind it, and green saliva dripped from its lamprey maw, burning the metal deck further.
The noise may have subsided, but Eresh was still on high alert. Whatever was up ahead, it sounded quite different from the beast the pair had defeated some hours earlier, and he could feel a sort of tingling in his fingers and the palms of his hands. Anxiety? No, anticipation. The next sort of beast would surely be more fearsome than the last.. and he intended to take it on with no mercy.
Though after traveling for a time without any sign of another life form, he grew a bit restless. If something were here.. why didn’t it attack? The Metroid wasted no time in its assault.. did their behavior change as they underwent new evolutions? So many questions, so few answers. But hopefully, those answers wouldn’t remain elusive for much longer.
And fate seemed to be wryly granting his wish- for something did indeed meet them not too long after.. and his blade was brought up in an offensive stance. “Gamma, or Zeta? What are your bets, Ha’chidari?” He asked.. his muscles tensing.
Not a moment was given to the genetic chimera of a human woman as the creature twisted its own body like an eel moving through water, managing to dodge the missile that was fired even just mere feet away. A snap of its fangs as the creature launched itself up and grasped to the ceiling, almost spider-like as it whipped its tail, then craned its head and spit a glowing green wad of hissing mucus that eroded the floor almost immediately on contact.
It screeched again, snapping the encircled teeth together before launching itself at the brightly colored armor form of Samus even as she was firing overcharged wave beam bursts at it, only for the frequency pulses to crackle almost harmlessly along the creature's carapace.
"Shit, it's absorbing my beams right through contact!" she cried a split second before the creature slammed into her, pinning the hunter to the ground before tilting its head up to stare at the taller mawkin with all eight of its crimson ocular organs and snarl what almost sounded like a challenge. Carefully stepping while keeping a rear foot on Samus, the creature widened its own stance to move toward Eresh, a low growl coming from its chest cavity while the red nucleus inside the translucent membrane was glowing with purple crackles from the wave beam shots it had assimilated into its body.
Eresh had leaped back in surprise ad the creature suddenly lunged into action, hoping to get into a better position to strike with his catalyst blade. In that time, Samus had missed with her missile launcher and unloaded the wave beam at full bore.. and his eyes widened as he saw it have- absolutely no effect. Taking a couple paces back he held his blade up, ready to lunge as well when he stopped as the beast shrieked in challenge.. his companion under its foot.
The predator within the Mawkin yearned to fly forward and rend the monstrosity to pieces, no mercy, no finesse: a brutal clash befitting a brutal animal. The warrior in the bounty Hunter is what made him stay his hand and take a moment to evaluate the situation, slowly sheathing his weapon as he did so- a plan already formulating in his mind.
“Samus, ready your missiles and brace yourself.” Came over the comlink, the words calm, the Chozo’s tone even. An instant later the Grapple Beam projector on Eresh’ left arm activated and he snapped its energy tether forward; but not at the apparent Metroid. No, instead the magnetic beam would catch Samus herself, and then grow taut as the Mawkin warrior yanked her back towards him with all his might.. aiming to sweep the legs out from under the creature and force it to tumble.
“Now!!” Came the sharp command from the Chozo, as he fluidly unslung his rifle and took aim the moment she was safely out of the monsters grasp.. and he would unload a volley of shots.. aiming for the creatures nucleus-like midsection.
She could feel the weight of the creature, the 'Zeta' she had to assume, pushing on her as it snarled at Eresh. It was definitely a metroid, with the unmistakable membrane and nucleus just inches from her. Eresh spoke to her, told her to brace herself and ready her missiles. It took that same second for her to realize the zeta's mistake in holding her down with a *rear* foot.
A heavy click as her cannon switched to ballistic configuration, a purple hued micro missile flashing into existence just in time as the glowing beam of electromagnetic energy wrapped around her armor and pulled. The zeta stumbled, actually shocked and taken off guard by Eresh's action, and leaving its membrane in just the perfect spot for her to fire at almost point blank range. The blast was close enough to her that her shielding flared over her whole body, struggling to absorb the explosive force of the missile even as the grapple beam was pulling her away and along with the wave of pressure that further threw her toward Eresh. For a moment as she hit the ground, she thought she may have over done it, but her shields held, stable and still strong enough to quickly refresh as soon as they could cycle.
The Zeta itself was thrown back, slamming into the floor and skidding along a few meters before thrashing about and twisting back to its feet. It hissed as it turned back toward the pair. Green fluid was dripping from the unmistakable wounds it had sustained from the micro-missile, and the fact it was still standing, let alone still able to fight still after being hit point blank with enough explosive power to blast apart a small vehicle, said much for how resilient the creature was. Its carapace was riddled by impacts from the bullet barrage given it by Eresh's carbine, a few revealing dribbles of the same green fluids as the blasted away chunks from Samus' missile.
But it was still able to fight, which left it to screech and barrel toward them again.
Eresh felt the shockwave from that missile blast and braced his feet, his suits own shield shimmering slightly as a few errant pieces of shrapnel impacted it, and he would crouch beside Samus, opening fire again in a quick three round burst, rounds ricocheting off the tough chitin of its shoulder and armored head. “Good work. Keep it off kilter.” And then he ran forward, leaping to avoid a reflexive swipe from the Metroid- flipping over the creature. Landing behind the beast, the Mawkin spun and shouldered his rifle, only to give a surprised gasp as its tail swung and connected with his midsection, knocking him back several steps and then onto his back with a grunt as he lost balance, shield flaring from the impact.
The Metroid then turned and gave another shriek, before launching a glob of acidic bile at the Mawkin- who rolled to narrowly avoid it. Though thanks to this new vantage point he would aim while on his side.. letting loose a burst of rounds at its exposed membrane.
Samus pushed back to her feet as she witnessed the byplay between her companion and the zeta metroid. She saw her missile bank ready to go, and while it was distracted with the gunfire that pierced its membrane, Samus took her chance to throw herself clear to one side, allowing her mind to drift and her armor to shift into ball form while her consciousness drove it forward along the ground. Now on the facing side of the metroid, she reverted back to her normal state, cannon snapping open and loaded with a missile as she took aim at the metroid and fired.
It had dropped back down into a defensive position just as the missile was fired from the cannon, leaving the ballistic missile to slam and explode instead right into its open maw. It screamed out in agony as the micro warhead exploded, leaving its face torn and blasted with pieces of its fangs now missing. A low hiss escaped what was left of its face as it swelled up its chest, then let out a furious blast of intense hot breath, almost like plasma that rushed out at the pair.
It had been quite a few months since he had last seen it in action, but the so called “morph ball” always caught Eresh’s attention. The technological ingenuity alone made it one of his companion’s more amusing gadgets in his opinion, and he couldn’t help but marvel for a split second before he rolled out of her way as she returned to her natural form, opening fire on the creature. Rifle at the ready, he would then call out over the comm: “This beast is more magnificent than I could’ve anticipated; it’s truly worthy pre-“ his words were cut off by the sudden deluge of .. biological plasma?!
He was able to launch himself back far enough to avoid being fully bathed in the attack, but he was still lashed by the energy, and he felt his shields surge.. and then break as they absorbed the heat from the Metroids breath.
“Samus, I think we’ve played with this thing for long enough. If you have anything else up your sleeve.. I’d get it ready. I’ll try to create an opening for you.”
And that was when he took note of its eyes.. and he sensed opportunity. He again rushed the creature, only to skirt around the beast just before he came into range of its claws. He then raised his rifle and fired towards the left cluster of glowing red eyes. He then would duck as it swung its tail at him in retaliation, rolling and snapping up, now firing a burst at the right ocular cluster.
