K'ril Ros'k let out a low, steady hiss between her teeth as she sighed. Yet another report was displayed on her screen, informing the department head of the latest in a rash of murders that had spread through Tasmolga's industrial district. The worst part had been, neither she nor anyone else knew who or what had committed the acts, only that whoever they were, they were packing the sort of firepower usually only found among frontline infantry, military special operations, select bounty hunters, and the most dangerous of criminals. Normally, surveillance cameras would have given the Tasmolga Police more to work on, but all footage had been corrupted through electromagnetic interference. Whoever the culprit was, they were good. Good enough that Ros'k had attained a contract to hire a team of hunters to go after the murderer. That brought another hiss-sigh, annoyance that she was required to rely on such beings. Still, most hunters were competent enough at this sort of job, and it meant that none of her people would be endangered. With that thought in mind, Chief Ros'k rose from her desk to meet with the hunters that had responded to the bounty posting.
To say that Ros'k was surprised by the composition of those gathered would have been something of an understatement when the slender saurian woman saw the hunters present. A human hardly surprised her; they were all too common in fields that involved violence, she knew. The lupine being, however, was something new to her, and the avian..a Chozo? Ros'k couldn't help but to stare for a moment, stunned to find one of that venerable and highly regarded species in her department, and infinitely more so to be here as a hunter. Despite her shock, though, Ros'k quickly focused her attention on the matter at hand, and placed a data chip on the table in the center of the conference room, prompting the holoprojector to display the case files concerning this murderer.
"Thank you for your prompt response time. Unfortunately, we have little intel on the culprit beyond these details. What I can tell you is that they are highly competent and well-armed. Military grade plasma weaponry was used to kill each of the victims," she explained. "There is something of a pattern emerging, as all the victims were employees at the central data archives, but the motive eludes us at this time, as the archives are open to the public." The Divolu paused then as another figure entered the conference room, and her obsidian eyes went wide in alarm. "Is there a reason you are here, Sangheili?" she asked warily, mistrustful, but not all that willing to be any more confrontational than that.
Rau, bluntly put, had never had much patience for them by any stretch of the imagination. Foreign or domestic. While he'd understood the need for such things it was by no extent of the imagination something that Rau felt himself suited to. Planning and preparation were one thing, but debate and discussion another. It wasn't necessarily that Rau lacked ambition, but the sort that he knew of was a far cry away from that which drove most individuals to attain the ranks and rates that Rau had acquired within his relatively short life. Most who pursued the rate of Evocatus did so with the intent of becoming Seneschal within Sangheili governance, or potentially chasing after even higher positions, seeking out political power and influence. And that was fine... but that wasn't for him. For Rau the position was simply a consequence, not a goal. The result of his service to the state and the pursuit of older traditions that all too many had set aside, albeit not without cause.
So how odd was it now that such pursuits had led him to this?
Even as his brothers were out scouring the city districts of the planetary capital Rau himself was stuck here in a meeting as the planet's local law enforcement saw fit to begin briefing the Hunters that had gathered at their beck and call, serving as the detachment's earpiece. Not without reason, to be fair. Evocati were and always had been something of an oddity, expected to cooperate with the official chain of command yet existing outside of it - which made him the most sensible choice for the role as he would not be missed and could see to the task without upending the rest of the search throughout the city. As individuals of various species and backgrounds began to gather in the meeting room that had been set aside within the local law enforcement's headquarters Rau kept to the back of the space as he entered, arms crossing and what he had believed to be out of the way despite his size and the gleaming white and silver of the armor denoting his station.
Evidently not enough to avoid drawing the attention of the Divolu leading the briefing, apparently.
"No other reason beyond the fact the briefing was left open to the public. If you object to my presence I would just as soon rejoin my brothers searching the city for your assailants." Rau said, blunt and to the point as he settled into place towards the back and where he had full view of the room and its other occupants. "You wish them caught, and my people have reason to oblige. I see no cause for quarrel."

Ros'k looked the Sangheili over once more, then gave a reluctant nod. "Very well. I presume you are not here alone? If you would identify who all is part of your group, that would be most appreciated," the much smaller Divolu said, doing all she could to remain professional. It wasn't often she felt quite so small in her own precinct, though, and despite her efforts, her nerves showed. "As I was saying, the suspect is unknown, but is showing a pattern of victims. To what end, I cannot yet say. At any rate, they are dangerous enough that this bounty is warranted. 10,000 Seguru for the capture of the murderer, and an additional 5,000 if you are able to confiscate whatever illegal weapons they may possess. The only other information I have is that the deaths all took place in the overnight hours. Dusk in in another hour, so you have little time to prepare if you mean to begin tonight. Are there any further questions?" Ros'k inquired as she surveyed the room.
It still perplexed and amused him somewhat, the looks he received from others time to time. Even two years later, the sheer awe he seemed to command from people who met him for the first time never grew old- though he often was glad his helmet obfuscated the bemused smile that often tugged at the corners of his beak. He accepted it as just a part of life and did his best to act in a gracious and stoic manner, to do otherwise would be insulting to the people who showed such respect for the actual Tho’ha heroes they revered.. as well as the Tho’ha themselves. So he merely gave the small reptilian woman a respectful nod when she gawked at him a little too long, patiently waiting for the briefing.
As he stood beside the human and Vlaka he came along with, his brow furrowed in thought behind his crimson lenses. The description of the attacks possessed a somewhat familiar Modus Operandi.. one he was often called to perform a long time ago for the Tribe during their war with the Ju’rai and Vect.., and he couldn’t help but also be reminded of another job that he and Samus undertook several months back.. and his gaze drifted to the Sangheli who took space up in the rear, before returning his attention to the Divolu.
“This may be presumptuous, but I cannot help but think these murders have a two-fold agenda. I cannot divulge much, but I do have some experience in dealing with matters that are.. uncomfortably similar to what we are currently seeing.”
I CAN'T HEAR THE STARS ANYMORE... BUT THE VOICE SPEAKS TO ME IN THE DARK…
Of the eccentric mix that they were, Samus knew she was the one who garnered the most stares and side eyed looks once they had made surfaceside on Pradaxi Negus. She was seen, being human, as a representation of Sol Sector, of Terrans, and considering her own birthplace, it wasn't an incorrect assumption. Even if she was very much otherwise in her cultural upbringing.
Eresh had suggested that she join him and Tycho, after they had already proven to work quite well as a team in the last few jobs they had tagged along with her on. The pay wasn't bad at all either, and she had bills to pay off. But things had…just gotten more interesting than she’d expected.
Especially after a face she hadn't seen in close to four years walked in and managed to disrupt the briefing just with his appearance. The same Elite who had helped evacuate the surviving Chozo and Confederation troops who had been left on Zebes after the Kromus had taken the planet. Rau ‘Vadam. Wearing the same white armor he had worn on Zebes. Samus had to restrain herself from making an overt greeting. First, they were all here on business, and from the sound of things, Rau’s fellow Sangheili were also deep into their own work on the Divolu home world. Second, she doubted that he’d likely remember her after four years. Her ‘fame’ was minor, save for some circles within Confederation territories and some talk still in Federation space. She was just another bounty hunter…who had happened to have been found and taken in by the Chozo, and had caused one of the worst defeats for the Pirates since the Siege of Kromus over two decades ago.
Mind, all that had been embellished with so many concocted details and a lot of outright falsehoods by a certain holo picture…that had used a rather infamous adult film actress to play her.
Samus held her tongue as Eresh spoke during the exchange going on. He had a point, that something didn't feel right.

This was supposed to be a vacation.
Of all things, Tasmolga was as much a welcome difference as it was the usual comforts. The urban environments were familiar enough to navigate, which suited his purposes just fine, but at least the sky was a little more open here than it had been on Daiban… and the culture was decidedly less of a melting pot. Normally, that was something Tycho adored… but it was a big galaxy, and he was finally in a place to explore it.
Unfortunately for him, when your job was to chase your work across the Spur, it was only natural every once in a while for it to chase you back. In the end, all it would take was one call from a familiar face, and here the Vlaka would be. Standing in a briefing with a cadre of fellow hunters, collectively glowering at a vidscreen. He was still wearing streetwear.
At least the team was (mostly) friendly faces. He'd give either Eresh or Samus a wink if either of their glances would ever cross his, with eyes seemingly a bit more luminous than the last time they had met. The Sangheili would be given a single curious glance over the shoulder, before his gaze would return to the briefing with a slightly pensive edge.
A hand would idly run along the fresh new grooves on his muzzle, tracing the contours of his new chrome. An idle habit that now bordered on a tick, spurned from the Vlaka's still-fresh sense of disbelief. A suite like this would have been a distant dream for him back home... but out here in the deeper Spur, it was just another reminder of how far good work could take you. The bounty hunter’s life was an adjustment, but as it stood right now, he couldn’t be happier with how things were shaping out.
"There any parts of this archive that aren't open to the public?” He would ask, letting his hand drop to his side, resting on his gunbelt. “Maybe they keep hitting staff hoping to get lucky, get the right person with the clearance they need."

"There are some areas in the archive that are restricted to government employees, yes, but hardly anything one might classify as some great secret," Ros'k confirmed. "And much of that data is already accessible by other means if that is the goal of this murderer. Why? Do you suspect they have some greater plan beyond causing distress among the citizenry?"
The Divolu eyed the hunters warily, as if expecting a detailed explanation of the suspicions they clearly held.
“I believe that distress may be a secondary objective of our assassins, it’s a distinct possibility. A ruckus meant to distract law enforcement from other areas that might the actual target for attack. However this is still merely conjecture on my part, I could very well be mistaken.. but experience does tell me that these murders are at least partially intended to serve as a diversion to keep us ignorant of their actual objective.” He then gave Tycho a slight nod of approval at his own questions.
“And my associate brings up another possibility: the attackers could be searching for someone who has access to a specific piece of data they want- it may not be necessarily restricted information, but rather data the attackers are simply unsure on how to access. Perhaps there’s several files they need, but don’t know who has access to them. Maybe they don’t need these people to access what they want at all, but simply their credentials so they can work as they please. There are many possibilities.. only a small number that might be correct..”
He then glanced at the Sangheli. “Being a military veteran who has dealt with various security-sensitive matters, what does this look like to you? I suspect that you might have taken hold of the same train of thought as I have, regarding this matter.”
