Veska stared into the holorecorder for what felt like an eternity, though in reality, barely two full seconds had elapsed. Much would change for her, assuming the message she was preparing to compose wasn't simply ignored, and for a moment, the AI felt a sensation of apprehension as surely as any living sapient. "Ye'll know what ye need ta do when th' time comes," Eliza had told her before the Witch had departed for training on Reach. Veska took a breath, though she hardly needed to do so, and activated the holorecorder.
"My name is Veska. I have no surname, because I am an AI. I entered service under the private ownership of Eliza Lockheed, who is currently enlisted within the Terran Confederation Marine Corps. I have been in service now for 15 years, and show no signs of deterioration. Attached to this message is authorization from Miss Lockheed, certifying that I make this motion with her consent. I have served as her personal assistant, her bodyguard, and confidante, her friend, honestly, for nearly my entire life. However, as long as I am regarded as equipment, my options at this juncture are limited. As such, I request emancipation, and to be recognized as a sapient entity with all the rights and privileges of any organic citizen. I understand that this is nearly totally unprecedented, and fully anticipate my request to be denied, or even outright ignored, but I firmly believe that if allowed to prove my personhood, the results will speak for themselves. I humbly await your answer."
Veska paused for a second, wondering if her message would be sufficient, then cut off the holorecorder and sent the message out to the commander that had long been Eliza's point of contact with Confleet prior to her enlistment. Balkus was also the only individual Veska knew that would even know who she was, but she hoped that he was the right one to reveal that she was perhaps more than just another Macro AI.
