>100,000 BCE – The ancient Chozo leave their distant home galaxy in attempt to escape some unknown force, slowly making their way toward what will eventually be known as the Sol-Daiban Galaxy. They leave traces of their technology for species they encounter to one day learn from and evolve themselves, even as the Chozo, as a warrior culture, engage efforts to drive back the various other-dimensional beings that have assaulted the cosmos. As the Forerunner-Flood war has concluded and settled in the aftermath, the Chozo Ancients detect the firing of a strange energy form that makes them halt their approach and take station in the Ym’k’ru Dwarf Galaxy, some 423,000 light-years outside the galaxy, as they wait out these strange events. Following a few centuries, the Ancients continue their journey and discover that the energy they detected was part of a galactic scale array that enacted the sterilization of much of the galaxy’s sentient life. In effort to uphold the mantle of guidance that was given them by their higher creators, the Chozo send out groups to seek any signs of remaining sentient life.
97,300 BCE – The Chozo Ancients eventually arrive in the outer region of the galactic core and settle Zebes, establishing their capital city of Chozodia and constructing the Halls of I'ya'dn where the biotech egg containing the Armor of Varia will come to be housed in wait for the arrival of the foretold War Goddess.
18,500 BCE – The Great Schism occurs in the Chozo Empire, as one faction preaches pacifism is the next step of their race, while another argues that more militant development of their warrior culture needs to be attained in order to secure the desired true peace of their Ancestors via force. The pacifist faction comes to call itself the Brood and uses their quantum technologies to drive their rival faction from the galaxy, then begins to move through the inhabited systems in order to seed the ideals of peace through cooperation. Over the next several thousand years, the Brood begins attempts to extend their lifespans through various artificial means in order to better see their plans through.
15,000 BCE – After millions of years as a species of technological progress and mastery, the Chozo begin losing knowledge of their own Ancestors’ biotech and quantum technologies, as well as dimensional sciences. In addition, their wings that allowed them to fly of their own power begin to weaken and wither until they are gone. Suspicions fall on the long ago exiled insurgents, but the actual cause is never confirmed. As the millennia continue, the race that once created powerful artifacts such as the bio-booster Armor of Varia, drove off cosmic horrors like the Phantoon, and could grow biologically constructed trans-light vessels begins to fall from its highest glory, and while never descending into a total dark age, the future generations will never again reach the heights of their ancestors.
13,000 BCE – A insurgency incursion force penetrates into Zebes space, shocking the Brood with their return and the sheer brute power of their weapons technology. After a prolonged conflict, the Brood is able to defeat the Horde battle cruiser, causing it to crash into the Crateria region neighboring the Chozodia Plateau. While all members of the invasion are killed either during the conflict or the crash, greater effects from the remains of their ship slowly become clear as the Brood discover the presence of remaining ghostly entities and a growing other-planar influence that will eventually force them to abandon Chozodia in the millennia to come.
8000 BCE – Construction begins on the Nest, a sprawling underground city that will come to house the Brood once they are forced to abandon Chozodia. Despite taking up their new home in these caverns they create in the safety of Qro’mal Mountain, they do not totally leave Chozodia City behind, and on occasion return to the Halls of I'ya'dn and various holy sites that are safe from the growing presence of the Horde phantoms and the entity that has taken residence in the wreckage of the Horde battle cruiser.
6000 BCE – A Brood deep regions exploration team stumbles upon what seems to have been a secondary seed world of humans in the distant reaches of the Centaurus Arm, within fifteen hundred light years distance of the Gamma Halo. Over the course of a decade or more, this team would return with several examples of their biotechnologies to help uplift the inhabitants of this world, but were in turn betrayed and slaughtered by the very lifeforms they sought to help. None ever came to investigate what hat happen as coordinates were never kept with the team's home Nest. The region could come to be known by its inhabitants as the Orokin Cluster.
5000 BCE – Returning to the planet of human origin, one day to be known as Terra, the Brood makes efforts to help guide humanity toward its former state of culture and might, but are forced to consider abandoning efforts after a matter of centuries as some human factions begin worshipping the Chozo as ‘gods'. Despite leaving Terra to its own development, the Brood keeps an eye on the humans, making sure they don't have to step in to avoid the species destroying itself.
0 CE – The Brood finally discovers that birthrates of their species have been slowly declining for thousands of years. Unsure as to what is causing the frighteningly growing number of stillborn eggs, the Brood begins efforts to isolate the cause, but are unable to determine what is plaguing their species. All they know now is that their race is slowly going sterile.
1787 – Gray Voice, the future Speaker of the Council, is born on Zebes.
2245 – Bright Visions, the last Farseer of the Chozo, is born on Zebes, under a series of unusual celestial events.
2610 – Birth rates have bottomed out as the mysterious plague of sterility continues to claim more and more of the Brood. A last ditch effort to insure successful births is implemented, but for the next century, almost all eggs laid are stillborn or barren.
2651 – The Chozo bioengineer Shaded Whisper arrives on Zebes, claiming to have originally been from the M'k'na Nest, which later is discovered to have vanished. Using her knowledge and skills, Shaded Whisper develops and creates the biocomputer Mother Brain, and has the server drones of the Nest construct the Tourian central command structure deep underground to serve has the permanent home of the biotech engineered brain mass.
2681 – After having witnessed the events of the Kilrathi War, the Chozo Brood sends a small representation party to meet with the Coalition of Freed Worlds, helping them reorganize and begin expanding into what becomes known as the Galactic Federation. The Brood urges the Federation to include the Confederation and their Sangheili allies, but long memories of the days of the Covenant cause the newly formed Federation to put off the idea. This would soon reveal itself as a mistake when the Machine Empire returned in 2701 and drags the Sol-Daiban Galaxy into a apocalyptic war that spans another sixty-three years before the Empire mysteriously ends hostilities and withdraws back to Andromeda.
2723 – Maru, the last of the Chozo, is born on Zebes, the son of Bright Visions and Gray Voice, after a century of barren and stillborn eggs. He is the only Chozo remaining unaffected by the plague of sterility, and his lifespan is unaffected by the artificial measures taken by his kin, leaving him with a normal natural expectancy of six to seven hundred years.
2852 – A new type of AI unit is brought to life following decades of development, based on information given to the Galactic Federation by members of the Brood regarding the Mother Brain biocomputer that manages the Zebes Nest. Large mechanical 'brains' that will come to act as central systems control for military and police command ships, these AIs will be known as Aurora Units. The first of these new Aurora Units is labeled 616, and following successful installation in the GFS Nebula, becomes a new standard that will eventually supplant the Smart type AIs developed and used during the time of the UNSC, at the insistence of Galactic Federation officials.
2913 – The Kromus Imperium makes small incursion strikes at the Galactic Federation from their as yet unknown central location of Krom in the Large Magellanic Cloud. They are considered to be minor concerns as most actions are random accounts of piracy. As the years go on, further such actions lead to the Kromus scouting groups being labeled as ‘space pirates’ by Federation media. Only ConFleet Intelligence considers the Kromus to be a possible larger threat than believed by the Federation Congress.
2925 – Jonathan Rodney Aran is born in Riverside, Iowa to Exploration Corps Lieutenant Sarah Aran. His biological father, James Rayner, was killed before John's birth as a result of a botched bounty job for the Federation, in truth sold out to the Mal’karvian mob by inside corruption in the Federation Police Force.
2934 – Advanced Mechanical and Defense Concepts, a long time defense contractor and weapons developer, in conjunction with the Confederation military Department of Advanced Warfare, begins development and testing on a new type of Powered Combat Armor and bio-enhancing augmentation process under the direction of Doctor Theodora Stark, based on uncovered combat action information regarding the legendary Spartans of the 2550s. The details on the Spartan augmentation process and Mjolnir armor designs are unfortunately limited due to fragmentation of the original data by the defunct Office of Naval Intelligence prior their collapse in 2573 and the loss of the Spartan-IV process data during the destruction of SRA databases in the Machine War, leaving little to use as a structural baseline. Development on this new PCA and augmentation system will take over a decade due to having to reconstruct large amounts of lost and fragmented data using what remained of information on the Spartan-IVs, HRUNTING Mk 3 Exoskeleton power frames, and the Semi-Powered Infiltration armor designs and schematics as a starting point.
2946 – G’mar Vogl is elected and sworn in as Chairman of the Galactic Federation. Junior Lieutenant John Aran is in attendance at the swearing in ceremonies as an escort attachment for General Masrani, and is approached by the young Chozo Maru, whom is in attendance as a junior observer with the representatives of the Chozo Brood; Gray Voice, Silver Winds, and Azure Paths. This continues into a friendship between the two over the years.
2947 – The Kromus Imperium abandons the previous pretenses of ‘simple pirates’ and strikes out from their hidden homeworld in the Large Magellanic Cloud. After the decimation of the Terran colony Beacon, the Confederation launches full-scale war on the Kromus, with the backing of the Federation for any external support needed.
2949 – Two years into the Kromus war, the new ÆSIR Powered Combat Armors are finally brought out of fifteen years of development and testing, and introduced to a special forces unit under the command of Major Elias Smythe. 2nd Lieutenant John Aran is assigned to this unit after successful assumption of command to rescue operations of fleet Captain Castor Dane and four other fleet officers from Kromus captivity following the death of his unit's previous commanding officer on Syphus-III. Like other assigned volunteers to the ÆSIR project, Aran undergoes a number of biotech and cybernetic augmentations to enhance his speed, durability, reflexes and strength, increasing all of his physical abilities by a factor of almost two hundred percent over his original levels.
2951 – After two decades of covert operations, ConFleet Intelligence finally tracks the homeworld of the Kromus back to the Large Magellanic Cloud. Due to its position outside the Sol-Daiban Galaxy, no known Jump Points allow access to the Krom System, and efforts are made to begin developing the slipspace translight drives necessary to reach and assault the Kromus home systems. In addition, construction secretly begins on a new class of war-ready super carrier, the largest built by Terran forces since the UNSC Infinity. This battle-carrier, the brainchild of now Rear Admiral Dane, will face delays due to several relocations to keep the shipyards and construction of the Confederation-class hidden and safe from not only the Kromus, but from the Galactic Federation as well. To accompany this new ship, DAW R&D divisions begin work on a new class of sapient AI program, in hopes of using newer technologies to improve the smart type AIs and circumvent Federation oversight and control of Terran affairs. This new AI, once awakened in 2975, will be named Cora.
2953 – The Kromus attempt an invasion of the planet Zebes in the FS-176 system. 1st Lieutenant John Aran is contacted by Maru for assistance, as the Brood has little means to defend itself or the ancient relics and technology of their precursor ancestors. A secret joint operation with their Sangheili allies is conducted under the direction of Rear Admiral Dane from the GFS Olympus, with Lieutenant Aran in command of the ÆSIR unit sent along with army regulars and marines to the planet surface. After a brutal encounter with a strange dragonoid being who was in command of the Kromus before they were successfully driven from Zebes, the truth of the operation is stricken from almost all records by Admiral Dane’s authority to preserve the Chozo's hidden location. On record, the mission is classified and listed as preventing Kromus attainment of possible Forerunner technologies. John Aran is rewarded with promotion to the rank of field captain, and the assignment of his own special combat unit using the new ÆSIR mk2 PCA, later nicknamed “Spartans” in honor of the legendary combat troops that inspired the development of their augmentations and powered armors. Behind closed doors, he is gifted with a Chozo Catalyst Blade by Maru in thanks for helping save the Brood.
2954 – After a series of failed strikes on Kromus strongholds in the Sol-Daiban galaxy, Confed forces discover the true identity of the Kromus military leader; a dragonoid life form called Ridley, who was present at the failed Kromus invasion of Zebes, and has evaded capture and termination for the last decade of the war. Psychological studies as well suggest that without a central dominating leader, the Kromus would fracture and turn on themselves.
2956 – Following five years of research and testing in tandem with Sangheili engineers, the new Reclaimer-type slipspace drive is successful in allowing the GFS Gather into Victory to exceed all known velocity records in over two hundred years since the disappearance of the UNSC Infinity, reaching speeds of over 600 light-years an hour. Upon successful return to the Alpha Centauri testing grounds, the plan to take the war back to the Kromus is put into action as the Seventh Fleet is recalled for slipdrive refits to prepare for the assault on the LMC.
2958.218 – Samus Aran is born in Coven City, Iowa to Virginia Stark-Aran while her father John Aran is still fighting in the Kromus War. After two months, her mother hands the infant into the care of her grandmother before resuming her classified position as ÆSIR Agent Valkyrie and joins the LMC assault fleet.
2958.289 – The final phase of the Confederation plan to take out the Kromus Imperium and end the decade long war is put into action as the GFS Olympus and the Seventh Fleet, in conjunction with a Sangheili strike fleet and under the command of Rear Admiral Dane, enter Slipspace and cross the expanse into the Large Magellanic Cloud. Over a period of a year, operations bases are established while the fleet makes headway in clearing a path toward Krom, the center of the Kromus Empire. However, the massive Kromus Fleet that arrives once Confederation forces have made position at five to one ratios reveals that everything leading to the staging at Krom had been a carefully planned trap. In the final push, the GFS Vanaheim and its escorts are lost when the Kromus super dreadnought the Cunning Death and its accompanying fleet attempt to push the Confederation forces back while ground forces are launched for the siege attack on Krom itself. Once on the surface, Confederation set up operations and begin the push into Kromus command territory while the fleet battle rages in orbit. In the last days of the Siege of Krom, Captain John Aran leads the Spartans into the command complex and encounters the dragonoid Ridley again, engaging the Kromus high commander in a battle that ends in Ridley's presumed death, while the Sangheili CSO Ardent Contrition and its escorts regroup formations to push through the Kromus fleet and allow the Confederation fleet time to drop a planet cracking Temblor bomb on Krom once ground troops are evacuated. The various Kromus faction species retreat from their home space upon successful deployment of the Temblor bomb and the destruction of Krom, with Chairman Vog'l later proclaiming an ending to the twelve year long war. Within months, however, evidence of corruption, bribery, and unusual actions by Vog'l that had allowed the Kromus their opportunity to begin burning planets leads to his impeachment and imprisonment. Following the end of the Kromus War, the Cunning Death is listed as destroyed, though no remains or debris can be found, the same with the presumed dead High Commander Ridley. Captain Aran and his unit are awarded some of the highest military honors for their actions and service before his distinguished discharge from active service and return home along with his wife to Earth to meet his daughter Samus for the first time.
2960 – Following Vog'l’s disgrace and imprisonment after a year long trial, Mantu Representative Councilor Arba’dos Kea'ton is elected Chairman of the Galactic Federation following the first major election cycle since the Kromus War began. Due to the plight-ridden history of his own race, Kea’ton takes a much more sympathetic position toward the involvement of the Terrans and other ostracized races of the Federation than his predecessors, a move that will slowly make him less popular with certain political factions such as the Fro'mal and Praetorius parties, but much more popular with the common people
2961 – Hosting a visit from the Chozo Brood and his old friend Maru, now Engineering and Security Chief John Aran denies a release of the Afloraltite being mined on Colony K-2L when Gray Voice requests a "loan" of the incendiary crystalline ore, but will not disclose the reasons for the Chozo needing it. Despite this, Maru takes the opportunity to meet and get to know John's three-year-old daughter, Samus. Once the Chozo depart, K-2L is attacked by a Kromus raiding party for the mined Afloraltite. During the attack, Virginia Aran is killed in defense of Samus by the thought dead Ridley. Having eliminated a raid team of Kromus, John Aran manages to engage Ridley before Samus is seriously harmed, and ends up time setting a bandolier loaded with Afloraltite canisters to before grappling with Ridley and self-detonating in a massive blast that seems to have claimed them both. After the detection of the K-2L distress signal, Maru leads a rescue team back to the colony, only to find that three-year-old Samus is the lone survivor. Due to the trauma that the child has endured, she is unable to remember what has happened, and Maru takes the human girl into his own care to return with him to Zebes. Following their return, Maru proclaims Samus to be his adopted daughter in order to make sure she remains safe.
2973 – After eleven years in the care of her adopted Chozo father, Maru, Samus Aran returns to Terran space and begins efforts to re-acclimate to her species of birth. Enrolling in the Confederation army academy at Mountain Point in Wyoming with the aid of Admiral Castor Dane, Samus starts what she thinks would be a road her birth-parents would have wanted for her. It is at the academy that she meets sophomore cadet Ian Malkovich and his older brother, recently promoted Army Captain Adam Malkovich.
2974 – After a noticed pattern of increasing Kromus pirate activity, the construction of the Concordia is relocated to the Olympus Mons shipyards in orbit over Mars, with minimal work needed to complete the super carrier, and allowing the public to know of the experimental ship. Behind closed doors, the ship is entered into service under the long unused TCS registry instead of GFS. As well, the development on the new breed of AI has found as much method to extend Smart AI memory capacity and lifespan limits, allowing the Newtype AI to have an operational lifespan of at least fifteen years.
2975 – Following a freak accident during a rescue and repair operation aboard the Lusitania that claimed the lives of Ian Malkovich and four others, Samus drops out of the Academy and leaves Confederation Space to return to Zebes. Newtype AI Cora is brought online, installed into the Concordia as its figurative heart and soul.
2976 – The TCS Concordia is revealed in full and set on her maiden assignment of policing the fragmented Kromus pirate bands and setting order in the more wild systems, put into the command of newly promoted and branch transferred Commander Adam Malkovich. The Cunning Death appears after almost eighteen years of being presumed destroyed in the Siege of Krom. Soon after, the Kromus Pirates make for Zebes and surprise the Chozo Brood with an invasion during the night. Maru is quick to evacuate Samus to a prepared runabout where he secretly set up a charging containment chamber for her powered suit, and sets the X1 shuttle on an automated pilot for the nearest Confederation territory. Samus and her ship end up on the planet Calliope IX, where her panicked state and frantic relay of the invasion are met with accusations of insanity and a month long stay in prison, until word of her imprisonment finally reaches Admiral Dane, who makes way to Calliope IX and secures her release. Upon relaying the news of Zebes, Samus is forced to watch as Confederation forces begin a two month siege that is unsuccessful at making any entry into the planet. She eventually realizes the Pirates are focused around defending against a large force and reclaims her gunship and powered suit to infiltrate Zebes on her own, as no one else knows the labyrinths of the planet like her. She makes planetfall after her ship is shot down over the Crateria region on December 25th 2976, and begins her week-long mission of taking back Zebes.
2977.001 – After the week-long action of her “Zero Mission”, Samus reaches the Tourian central command structure that is home of the Chozo Artificial Intelligence, the Mother Brain. This last siege action ends in the destruction of the Mother Brain and the collapse of the Tourian central complex, insuring the death of the biological super computer. Following this, the remaining Kromus Pirates scatter again as their leader, Ridley, has again vanished along with the Cunning Death, with his continued living status kept secret in order to prevent panic. The Chozo Brood on Zebes have either been killed or evacuated by Sangheili Silent Shadows, leaving only the last born of their kind, Maru, as the lone remaining occupant of the Nest city and the ancient city of Chozodia. Samus herself becomes the center of media attention for her now famous liberation of Zebes, and within six months is granted Star Hunter status with the Galactic Federation.
