It'd been roughly a fortnight since the ambiguously successful mission to the now-classified world of TX611, and still the memories of the things Eliza had witnessed there lingered, nagging at the back of her mind. While she was indeed important to the continued success of Arcanus Military Industries, her presence wasn't exactly needed daily, thanks to a highly skilled roster of project directors and department leaders that helped the corporate conglomerate run smoothly on a day to day basis. As such, the Witch supplemented her income and lifestyle with bounty missions. Until recently, though, it hadn't occurred to her that she might be woefully underequipped for the hazards of the job. After all, her weaponry was on par with even Confed infantry weaponry, and while her armor wasn't quite as protective as some infantry hardsuits, it provided far more mobility than anything but the finest powered combat armors.
With the war only intensifying, however, the likelihood of missions that would amount to privateer work against enemies armed with energy weapons, along with the revelation of whatever those creatures had been, Eliza was left with little other conclusion than that her current armor was simply not up to the increasing demands. The trouble was, mobility and agility were her greatest assets, and the existing selection of hardsuits and shielded armors simply didn't afford her the levels of movement she needed in order to perform at her best.
"Ma'am? You've been staring at the holoprojector for the past five minutes, is everything alright?" the deceptively human voice of Eliza's personal assistant broke in on the older woman's thoughts.
"Sorry, jist-"
"Distracted? You're still unsettled at the fact we've still no idea what those things were on TX611, aren't you?" the AI guessed.
"Ye know, there's times I really question th' wisdom in programmin' ye ta understand Terran psychology and shite.." Eliza muttered. "But aye, ye're right. Canna let myself dwell on shite I'm na like ta get answers fer any time soon. Best get these schematics sorted out, coz Confed's no doubt na gannin ta authorize this unless they have full details on th' capabilities."
"That is Confed regulation, yes. I think your existing combat suit might serve well as an undersuit of sorts. It's lightweight and flexible, and should provide a touch more protection without sacrificing mobility any further. Plus, a few simple redesigns would make for an excellent interface into any systems you might deign to install into the outer layers of armor," Veska suggested.
The Witch chuckled softly as she quickly began tabbing through display options on the holoprojector, deftly setting up a technical readout of a modified set of carbon nanofiber armor very much like her own combat suit. "Hmm..hydrostatic gel layer here, I think," she mused. "Donna want ta overheat, and should soften th' heavier hits. Donna want ta get too insane, though. Weight's gannin ta increase a fair bit th' moment I add in metal plates.."
"Wouldn't shields be better to counteract energy weaponry, rather than metallic glass plates?"
Eliza paused for a moment as she considered the android's query. She had a valid point.. "Good thing these government bounties pay well enough. Looks like we might need a reactor. That'd allow us ta run power through th' undersuit and amplify strength, so th' weight shouldna be too much of an issue if Confed signs off on that, but th' real gem here is it'd give us some shield options. Kinda want ta add some more ta this, but AMI's na footin' this bill. Buildin' th' ideal armor fer me all in one go would be th' sort of expenditure ye'd see on a government budget."
"That seems problematic. Couldn't you just add improvements as you're able, though?"
"What, like a Mark system? Possibly. We'll see what Confed makes of this design, first. Hopefully, they'll approve it and we can work fram there."
"Hmm..So what would you title this, then? For their records." Veska wondered.
"Na quite sure, but I think.." the ashen-haired woman chuckled softly as she remembered something not unlike what the proposed design resembled. "Project Iron Man."
