Neremyn sat at the small terminal in his rented domicile with fingers suspended frozen above the interface as he formulated a satisfactorily formal message. It had taken him a couple weeks of looking, starting with just a name and an image, for the contact information of the one arcanist contact that imperial officials were aware of in the Spur. It wasn't that the one known as Eliza was hiding, but rather that there were just so many people in the Spur that even with a magnet it would take a long time to find the proverbial needle in a haystack. After some time thinking, his fingers began their work.
-- To the attention of Eliza Lockheed, I, Neremyn Yslaminson of Midgard, Imperial Alchemist, Have contacted you with the aid of the Imperial Embassy, specifically that of one Operative Seeker. I ask if you would have interest in an academic exchange on matters Arcane, and if so that such an exchange may occur. There is much that can and ought be learnt on both sides of the cosmic divide, and perhaps in this exchange of the arts something fascinatingly new could be discovered. Attached you shall find a translated version of my study on the Resonance of 1-Diazidocarbamoyl-5-Azidotetrazole and the Measured Effect of Observation Via Astral Perception, which should serve as sufficient proof of the sincerity of this academic venture. On another note, If you know of other Arcanists with whom I may also initiate communications with, I humbly request that you expedite my search by sharing whatever non-sensitive information you are willing to provide. On yet another note, If your people are human as all reports would suggest, do you know what if any connection they may have with my Cousins in the Empire? --
Scanning back over the message, the dark elf made several corrections and minor adjustments, eventually finding it satisfactory he leant back. Rubbing his metal eye a little he mused, that study was a mixed bag; on one hand, his safety measures for the first half were insufficient, hence his cybernetic optic; on the other hand, he had shown that merely observing the resonance of an object could change said resonance. It could mean that one day they'd figure out how to transmute things via projection, but there were several more hurdles to get over for that one. Leaning forward again, he'd tap a few more inputs to finalize and send the digital letter. It was time for him to get some sleep.

Eliza received messages via her commsnet inbox on a daily basis that required her attention, even after having stepped down as CEO of Arcanus Military Industries, though most of them were contacts she'd made on Terra, Mars, Daiban, or Angel City, keeping the woman apprised of events ongoing and new technological developments as they came to the attention of such contacts. She did not, however, expect to receive a communique from a self-professed alchemist. Even so, she read the letter through, then pulled up the attachment. The name Seeker further confirmed in Eliza's mind that this Neremyn was at least earnest in their desire for academic exchange.
"To Alchemist Yslaminson, I have received your message, as well as the study notes attached, though I must ask why you would dabble in something so recklessly unstable. My own people have long abandoned interest in the compound, owing to it being too sensitive for practical use. That said, I would not be opposed to this exchange, and to that end, I am likewise attaching notes on two spells within my repertoire, which you are welcome to use to develop your own practical applications. The first is what has been known in some circles as a cantrip, dubbed Bursting Shot, and the second is a higher level spell called Create Vacuum. As you might have surmised, these are both of a martial bent, though I would imagine the latter might be useful for certain manufacturing applications. Regarding your inquiry on other casters, there was once an order of such based on Terra, called the Masters of the Mystic Arts, but they have long since either disbanded, gone into hiding, or have died out. I have not myself had contact in more than 900 years. I must add, by the way, that magic is not common knowledge within the Orion Spur, and the truth of my nature is, at present time, still a classified manner for my own well-being. I tell you this in confidence, as you are already aware of my status as a practitioner of the arcane arts. Treat these details as such. Pertaining to your final question, I have no knowledge as of this present time, though it is possible that ancient colonies based out of Terra were your own people's origins in some manner. Terran history dates back considerably further than many have long thought, though details remain occluded. Should I come upon new information that prompts revising or honing details, I shall pass it along to you as my schedule allows. Be advised, I am currently enlisted within the Terran Confederation Marine Corps, and as such, missions may place me out of civilian contact for extended periods of time. Best Regards, Eliza Lockheed"
Once the message was completed, Eliza sent it out, entirely unaware of how long it might take to reach its destination. Long enough that it could wait until after she had awoken, and likely after the day's training.
After several weeks of analysis and failed experiments within a couple isolated nooks and crannies he had found near his apartment, Neremyn came to the conclusion that he would require some much more fundamental lessons on Terran Arcanology. The idea of the Bursting Shot spell was certainly an interesting one, it reminded him of the enchanted elemental charging attachments used by Elite/Valuable soldiers in the military, the other spell though was quite beyond him. It was past time for a response, He'd only delayed this long because he was still processing the information.
-- To Madam Lockheed, Firstly, my study on C2N14 was driven not by a pursuit of direct utilization, but rather in understanding the involved phenomena and expanding theoretical knowledge. I, of course, did pay the price, but I'd not change a thing.
Secondly, I fear that the attached formulae you provided with your previous message are beyond me. Perhaps they would be of more use to the Warmages, or Evokers, but they are decidedly incompatible with mine current understanding of the arcane. If you would be willing, some more fundamental theorems from the Terran Schools would be appreciated. In exchange, I shall provide with this message several publicly available recordings of Lectures from the Imperial Academy of Alchemy. I do apologize for errors in the subtitle translations, as they were autogenerated, hopefully your translation software is sufficiently updated to do a live conversion of the audio.
Finally, with your permission, I would ask to be allowed to send copies of the Formulae and Theorems from this exchange to the Academy and Archives, of course I would scrub any personally identifying information you so desire, though it would be a shame for such contributions to not be properly accredited. Do note, there are some things that I cannot share due to national security reasons, and I assume that you also have several secrets not for sharing, hopefully we shall be able to work around these strictures for the advancement of our respective sciences. --
The alchemist wouldn't even need to download the mentioned lectures first, he kept several dozen to listen to during his ruminations and brainstorming. Finishing with the message, he sent it and stepped away, it was time to get back to his trinket-crafting. Rent wouldn't pay itself, and they didn't accept Imperial Marks yet, fortunately the local pawn shops couldn't get enough of the 'exotic new foreign merchandise'. Hopefully he'd be able to save enough for some additional local protection tech, he wasn't about to get a desk job, and it would be rather hard for a foreign military member to get a research job, bounty hunting would provide lots of opportunities.

Eliza perked an eyebrow as she received a somewhat familiar alert on her commsnet inbox, having nearly forgotten about the last exchange she'd engaged in, busy as she'd been with her training in proper intelligence gathering and assessment within the confines of a military command. As she currently had a free day, she opened the message, read it, then prepared her reply.
"To Alchemist Yslaminson, It is comforting to know you have greater sense than I had feared you possessed, though it is unfortunate to hear your research came at a cost. Hopefully, it was nothing more than a few ruined instruments, and not a ruined limb. Regarding the arcane formulae I sent you previously, feel free to pass them along to your people's specialists in such fields. I can't imagine such good-faith exchanges pose a national security threat, particularly in light of the current conflict into which I will be personally entering after my training is completed Hopefully, your people are able to avoid getting involved, but that isn't really the subject matter at hand, I suppose. There's not a massive body of academic work concerning Terran arcana, unfortunately, and while I am familiar with the practical applications, I am hardly what you'd call a professor. That said, the fundamentals I can at least provide. It is generally accepted that magic can be divided into one of several schools of arcane discipline.
Chronoturgy is a largely enigmatic school, which, as the name might suggest, focuses on the manipulation of the time aspect of space-time, and to the best of my knowledge, the only groups that were ever known to make regular use of this school of magic are the Umbra Witch and Lumen Sage clans, the latter of which is extinct, and the former of which is defunct, with only yours truly being confirmed as still living. The Sorcerer Supreme, the leader of the Masters of the Mystic Arts I mentioned in my last message, had access to an artifact that granted a high degree of control over chronoturgy-based magics, as well, but as I also stated, they are disbanded, if not dead outright.
Graviturgy is another school with which I am familiar, but is relatively utilized, and focuses on the manipulation of gravitational fields. This makes it useful for battlefield control when facing hostile infantry lacking power armor, as well as a number of older classifications of aircraft that lack anti-grav technology.
Evocation, I suspect you are familiar enough with, as this is the bread and butter of a combat-focused caster, and focuses on the manipulation of various forms of energy.
Abjuration is a school of magic with which I am not especially familiar, as while it focuses on arcane defense and protection, I typically favor avoiding danger via stealth and evasion, as opposed to outright shielding, since this is more energy intensive, and I have already specialized myself in the more offensive aspects of spellcraft.
Transmutation is perhaps one of the other more commonly used schools of magic, and one that I dabble in in order to conceal my identity. As you might have begun to surmise, Terran schools of magic tend to be named fairly straightforward, so that there is little to be confused.
Necroturgy is somewhat akin to evocation, and has been mislabeled so many times that it is known better by its misnomer than the actual name. More widely known as necromancy, this school of magic deals in the manipulation of life force, and is commonly viewed as a dark art, since this also includes spells that create undead. Fortunately, it is particularly energy intensive, and with the Shattering roughly 960 Terran years ago, has not been observed within at least Terran-controlled space.
Should you desire to know more on specific spells that I might know of within the schools I have mentioned firsthand knowledge, I would be happy to provide such information. As for the transmission of copies of these exchanges for the purpose of academic study, you are more than welcome to do so. If this is information that will only appear in Imperial space, then it should likewise be safe to do so unredacted. My concern is for poor responses within the Spur, after all. Best Regards, Eliza Lockheed
Satisfied with the surprisingly lengthy response she'd typed up, Eliza sent the message, then resumed the rest of her day. Ideas for a heavy combat exosuit had been growing in her mind for the past few days, after all, and she had time enough that she could probably start on a general outline for blueprints..
There was much for him to consider, there were several similarities between the Terran schools and the primary areas of Imperial study, but some glaring differences as well.
-- Lockheed, Again, apologies for the delays, many things have had to be done and considered. I am afraid that I must ask for a pseudonym underwhich I shall submit your contributions, as the fruits of this must needs be distributed to all who would seek it. You speak of grand things lost, as well as things not thought possible. The lectures I previously sent provide a solid foundation, but I shall give mine own summaries of our "Schools" and how they may compare to your Terran ones
Alchemy: The science-art of shaping matter through application of mana and Will, it serves as the foundation for our industrial might. We pluck at the strands of what is and weave them into what isn't, everything has a 'sound' and everything 'listens'.
Enchantment: Teaching metal to sing, it is the imbuement of magic into machines, pretty self explanatory. We have countless guilds dedicated to this practice, as we have not found a means of automating it at all.
Evocation: Very much like your own Evocation, it is the simple conversion of mana into destruction, Energy to other forms of Energy.
Abjuration: This is the manipulation of Fields. The creation and manipulation of solidified mana or less exotic fields. This would include what you call Graviturgy.
Restoration: The manipulation of life, generally for restorative purposes, hence the name. It would be equivalent to your 'necroturgy', but we are unable to create undead things; the closest equivalent would be the Revenants, which are created using recycled souls. We have ancient stories of such things as 'Necromancers' but they are of the Old World, which we only know exists because we obviously weren't native to the Homeworld.
I cannot get into specifics of Formulae, due to aforementioned security risks, but the concepts are public domain. I apologize for the brevity, the shortness of this summary, but our arcane traditions have largely been directed to distilling everything down to it's most efficient possible form, squeezing as much as we can out of the limitations of man and machine. -- The Alchemist wiped his brow, he stopped and considered, this could be more than just a simple exchange. An outside perspective could allow for great insights into either school of thought, he would have to reconsider connections and categorizations, there was overlap within the Imperial schools. Proper research should be pursued, collaborative projects. Perhaps he could convince the Academy to ensure protection of this other arcanist in the event of Hostile reactions from the Spur as they alluded to.
