Ash'kar Be-hek was not an especially anxious Mawkin, slow to worry about matters that others might have long begun to panic over. It was a trait that had served him well as the Fleetmaster of the Avia-Ra's navy, and continued to do so now, even as the military leader of a people too few to afford any military action. However, something felt off the moment he'd exited Slipspace. He knew his ship was slower, certainly, but he'd expected at least a ship to guard the system, based on all he'd been told. Instead, he was greeted by a nearly empty system. No ships, a few satellites, and perhaps most unsettling, not a single indication of any civilization on the planet. While he'd been informed that the Chozo nest on this world had gone dark, it was quite another thing to see it with one's own eyes, and somehow, this felt far different from Tarin, despite the clear signs of the new nest world of the Mawkin being a tomb.
"Personal log, 05.07.2979 TR. The world I was informed of by Eresh Tarren proves to be a desolate place, yet despite assurances, he is not to be found. I cannot yet be certain if his transport remains planetside, or if matters pressed him elsewhere. That he would do so without leaving a message bodes ill, and my heart tells me that I should avoid setting talon on this world if at all possible. We shall see if fate is so accommodating."
Ash'kar then ended the recording and began to survey his sensor readouts, hoping to discern some measure of what may have occurred, and why he appeared to be alone in this system. Hoping to increase his chances of learning as much as possible, the Mawkin leader then deployed a quartet of exploration drones. Though small, they sported a wide array of sensors, and had powerful enough transmitters that they would remain in contact as deep 500 meters underground. While it was slower than entering atmosphere and looking around personally, it was also safer, and he meant to trust his instinct on this endeavor, especially so far from any potential aid. What he might find, though, even he couldn't begin to guess.

The moment that Ash'kar deployed his drones it would become immediately apparent that he was not alone in the system. Space would roil only a handful of kilometers ahead of his own vessel, an enormous hull of iridescent silver emerging from the blue-white distortion as static crackled over the massive ship's hull and shielding - a downward hooked prow clearly denoting it as a Syfon-pattern assault carrier as the massive vessel blocked both the forward view of the Mawkin ship as well as the flight paths of his drones. While the ship's weapon systems didn't allow for the same detection of target locks as many less advanced weapons systems such as those used by human missile variants, the brilliant, needle thin incandescent flash of a violet pulse laser would paint a clear picture as a warning shot from a pulse laser all but grazed the lead drone... followed by a hail on an open audio channel.
"Disable and recall your drones. You will not be asked again. Agár is under quarantine and pending cleansing. We know who you are, Ash'kar Be-hek, and the only question is why you are here. State your intentions or leave this system."

Ash'kar clacked his beak in agitation, but, seeing that he was looking at a proper warship, and not some pirate vessel, he recalled the drones without argument. It may have stung his pride somewhat, but there was hardly anything he could do in practical terms. Besides that, he was not deaf to what the Sangheili had said. He was definitely right in opting to send out his drones instead.
"I am here because this is, or perhaps more appropriately, was a Chozo world, and I was informed of it with the aim of potentially recovering cultural artifacts, that my tribe might glean more of what we left behind. But tell me, what business have Sangheili over such a world? What has happened that it is under quarantine, and where are those that arrived ahead of me?" It was not a true challenge, but rather a way to comply while still making it plain that he was hardly one of their underlings.

The response was not immediate following Ash'kar's own answer, but the silence that filled that space was both tense and a message all unto itself. No further moves were taken, however, as the Mawkin recalled his drones - true to their word the assault carrier did not escalate the situation, instead merely remaining where it was to block the other ship's approach vector to the planet. When they did finally speak again, however, the words that were transmitted carried a clear tone of displeasure.
"A Chozo world, yes. You are not, outsider. Whatever relics lay planetside are not yours to claim anymore than they are ours."
Where most of the species within GalFed had accepted the Mawkin's arrival into the galaxy with a degree of welcome and fascination, the Sangheili had not. Enough records existed of a schism in the avian race's past not unlike that which had split their own Covenant centuries before, and for another race biologically similar enough to back the claim of being Chozo themselves to return to the galaxy when their "kin" were on the decline and fading... the timing was too convenient. The Mawkin might have been accommodating to GalFed and Confed up until this point and even the Chozo themselves may have been somewhat welcoming but such usurpation and manipulation was all too familiar to the Shipmaster's own people, only separated from his own generation's experiences by one or two at most.
"They are not here, and I am unaware of where they were taken. They are alive, although one was exposed to... infection on the planet's surface. We cannot risk the plague escaping off world. Until its fate is decided no vessels or objects will be allowed to approach the planet.

Eresh stared at the screen with no small measure of irritation, and he made no attempt to hide his offense. A warrior did not fear to show what they thought, even if prudence dictated that it be guided to avoid unnecessary escalations.
"They are our kin, Sangheili. You do not know what was taken from us in eons past. I came here because I was told it might help those that left our homes to rediscover what a great liar stole. I am understand your own people once endured something like this. I am sure you can then understand also why I might wish to investigate," he said carefully. "You said one was infected. Who?" Now his tone was less formal, and more concerned. Officially, Eresh Tarren was exiled for his continuous brash behavior, though in truth, this was merely a cover to allow at least a period of scouting the wider galaxy without the Mawkin security forces being implicated, such as they still remained. He doubted that particular cover would last, of course, but the prize of a second Chozo nest had been too valuable in potential. Na'kira was doing what she was able to guide their people spiritually, but she and Aten both were old, and Ash'kar was uncertain if their successors would be up to the challenge that lay before their people. Not without more cultural foundation not tainted by the lies that had blinded the rest of the Avia-Ra, at least. "One of my tribe was present," he added by way of explanation as to why he would have any reason to know.

"You are correct in that I do not know. Nor do I care. The people of this galaxy have more claim to these ruins as their appointed successors than those from another, no matter how similar they may be. All the same we would deny them access as well, and have not dared to touch or claim them ourselves." The Shipmaster responded, a growing hint of irritation in his own voice. The Mawkin warlord - leader, speaker, representative, whatever he wished to call himself - had not done well to touch on the history of the Sangheili with such a comparison. They had not left their home behind to try and reclaim their history. No, it was in doing so to try and claim the history of others who had come before, of those his people had once called gods, that they had overstepped their bounds, fallen to temptation and the manipulations of those who would prey on their fervor and even greed. All invoking that did was reinforce the idea that the Mawkin did not belong here, particularly when followed up by the other question.
The one that the Mawkin had claimed to disown and rebuke, and while the Sangheili and their leadership did not believe as such for even a moment... for now, the Shipmaster would play along with that assumption.
"Irrelevant, as is where he happens to be now unless you still claim him for your own. Your tribe exiled and disavowed him. I have no reason to inform an uninvolved state as to what happened on the surface beyond that it has been quarantined following the discovery of a pathogen or parasite. Whether or not it will be cleansed in fire to contain it remains to be seen."

Ash'kar drew in a steady breath, then let it out in a soft hissing sigh as he allowed his irritation to fall away. He'd get nowhere with this Sangheili trying to justify himself, and he suspected the Shipmaster distrusted much, if not all, of what he had thus far said.
"The matter of Eresh Tarren is..complicated, Shipmaster," he admitted cautiously. "We are a warrior people without the numbers to fight, yet war is all about us, and so we require eyes and ears about the wider galaxy. Who would I need to seek out for news of him?" the Mawkin asked, wishing not for the first time that he was still able to communicate with Maru, and perhaps from the Chozo learn more of the people from which his own had splintered away, something to build from that didn't involve the deception that was Old Un.
