Three days since Samus had woken up from the coma. She was still worn out, tired, but she was aware and able to speak. All she knew at the moment was that she had been infected with the hyperparasite that the Thé'nau tribe scientists had named the erris parasite, and it had nearly killed her. Her ship had been swept and sterilized, her power suit and her base armor had been jettisoned into the black hole that was about three astronomical units away from the pseudo-classified Confederation research station Beta-Five. Pseudo-classified in that its existence and general purpose was a matter of common record; a secure facility for researching and containing the worst of discovered contagions and parasite lifeforms for the purpose of preventing possible outbreaks and combating them.
What was classified was exactly what was stored there for research and development of containment and eradication. And she suspected that beyond the erris parasite, she would never learn exactly what was kept there, though she already had ideas of what was stored deep in the station.
Her father was still on board, along with Eresh as the station staff wanted to make sure without a doubt that he was clear of the same parasite. It had been nearly a week since they had arrived and her treatment had been successful in saving her life, so as it was, the mawkin had already been given a clean bill of health. He as well hadn't lost his armor. Something that she was still bitter about.
But she was alive. And according to the doctors, she had the metroid eggs she and Eresh had taken to thank for that. Cells had been cultured from one of the unhatched eggs and the metroid embryo inside it, then infused into her genetic structure by a Lifeworker Huragok that had accompanied her father from where he had been living in protection the last few years since she had destroyed Mother Brain and Tourian. It had been a desperate measure, with a very high chance that it wouldn't have worked if not for the Huragok having performed the gene fusion work.
But she was alive, and it had worked, yet with still unknown effects to aside an now established immunity to any further infestation by the erris. That was part of why she was still under observation. The DNA infusions done to her as a child to give her many of the genetic attributes of the Chozo had been carefully conducted and meticulously performed over a slow course of years to make sure they were adapted to and allowed to properly develop. This had been a desperate and rapid fusion of genetic material. For all they knew, there were many effects to be seen. Two more weeks, she had been told, was what they wanted to make sure she was going to be alright. It meant two more weeks for her father to be here, and two more weeks before Eresh could be on his way as well.
And she still was now without her power suit. So much for her day job as a bounty hunter. At least she could have visitors now.
To say that Eresh was relieved that she had survived her ordeal and the surgeries afterwards was a colossal understatement. For days Eresh grappled with the guilt that his negligence had nearly cost the Thoha Chozo their successor and the Galactic Federation one of their most promising assets.. not to mention the near loss of a daughter and close friend. So when visitation was finally granted, Eresh wasted little time in seeing his friend; well not before conceding to Maru the honor of being with his daughter first. Once the pair had ample time to reunite and rejoice in the fact that she had pulled through.. Eresh would visit.
Stooping as he stepped into Samus’ observation room, the Mawkin would address her with a quick bit of levity:
“I’m starting to believe that you are outright immortal, Ha’chidari.” He said with a soft chortle.. though the relief in his body language and his minute expressions was all but palpable to her.
She breathed in, lungs still a bit sore from what she had been through, as she turned toward the transparent wall that separated the mawkin from her. Yes, she was clear of the parasite, but they were still unsure what the metroid DNA would do to her. The reason she was still in quarantine. "I heard they shot my suit and armor toward the black hole at about fifteen klicks a second, too much of that crap had gotten in every little corner of my armor and sterilizing it wasn't a guarantee." A sigh came out as the young woman shrugged toward her larger friend. "Can't bill the military for it, lost all that doing a favor for my father and what's left of his tribe."
A dozen aging elders who had decades remaining, while what other Thó'ha tribes remained were slowly dying out. And their best efforts were creating a monster in order to destroy what they thought was a greater monster instead of just sterilizing the planet. Three years it had been that they, the rest of the galaxy, had been dealing with the consequences of the Thé'nau's efforts, their fault in foresight that the metroids would be used for other purposes. She had been forced to give up her home as a result, her father in the equivalent of military witness protection, and now his greatest gift and expression of protecting her, the powered armor he had designed himself for her, was gone.
And she had nearly died. She had died, her heart stopped for over a minute during the procedure to infuse her with metroid DNA. Yet, it had been the metroids that had saved her, after she had been fighting and exterminating them for three years, trying to keep the SR388 system under wraps as a respect to the Thé'nau who had died there and their intentions.
But what little she had read of their files from Agár did not put her at ease. Something they had been trying to mine there, something they called "aeion". And those designs; weapons designs.
They hadn't told the council on Zebes the whole truth. What was really going on there.
And then she remembered. "Eresh, have you sent any communications to General Be-hek since we left Daiban? I told him where we were going because I expected to be able to double back after recovering the research data and getting it to my father, so we could discuss what to do about the metroids."
If he had already gotten there and neither Confed or the Sangheili knew why he was there…well, the last thing the Mawkin needed as refugees was a military miscommunication.
Eresh would now his head as she spoke of what happened to her armor. As he expected the lost of her power suit had struck a blow to Samus, and he would give a chirrup of sympathy for her loss. “I had heard. The armor’s loss wasn’t in vain though. It saved you from losing your leg to the Metroid. I believe that your father is proud that his work was able to preserve you so that aid could’ve gotten to you. That said, I understand your frustration. That was your sword and your shield.. it was in a way irreplaceable. I’m certain that fate will smile on you in time however, and reward you with a suitable replacement.” He said with a faint smile tugging at the edges of his beak.
When she mentioned the general, he then held up a calming hand, pressing it against the glass. “He has been informed, worry not. I contacted him a couple days ago.. though I fear that I might get reprimanded for doing so.” He said with a chuckle. That was putting it mildly.. but it wasn’t something he was particularly concerned with at the moment.
“Have you felt any different, Samus? Is there any lingering pain?”
Body aches aside, she had to shake her head. "Just sore lungs, joints…the usual post-coma aches from not using those muscles for several days." The young woman took a breath as she realized she was rather hungry. Nothing new for her, considering her superhuman metabolism and calorie needs. It was just the sense of insatiable hunger that seemed off, something she'd noticed for the last few days since waking up. That and feeling oddly chilled. "Mostly hungry right now. And I wanna get out of here as soon as I can. Suit or not, I still have my job to do."
Nodding in sympathy, Eresh would give a soft chuckle at the mention of being sore and hungry. “You should ask to use their gym facility for a day or two before we leave, properly stretch out those muscles and get back into a semblance of normalcy. As for being hungry… I share that sentiment. For some reason the staff here can’t seem to grasp that I am three meters tall and over two hundred and sixty seven kilograms. The portion sizes here are pitiful.”
He then would tilt his head, regarding her a bit more seriously now. “And you are sure those are the only complaints you have?”
A shrug. "It'd be nice if someone could lighten up on the AC, but…space and all. Just been feeling a little chillier than I'm used to." And obviously some food would be nice. "Papa came by earlier to check me, and the directors here said they need to keep us for at least a few more days to observe me and make sure my ship is clear before either of us leave. They're going to be sending Maru and the Lifeworker back to…well, wherever the hell they have the Zebes survivors stashed away in Confederation space. From there, I head back to Daiban, and look into doing what I can to get by without my suit."
The comment about the AC drew an amused chirp from Eresh as he would wave his hand in a “so-so” manner. “It is a bit cooler than I’d like personally, but I came from a world that was covered in savannas and jungles.. I may be a bit biased towards summertime temperatures.” He then would give a light hearted sigh. “I suppose I could ask if they could turn up the heat in your room when I leave if you’d want.”
Before he said his goodbyes however, he would then tilt his head in thought.
“When you’re cleared to leave your room, I’d like you to come to the recreation center for awhile: help me shake the rust off.” He would then quickly add “After you properly get to say goodbye to your father and all of that, of course.”
