The conference hall was, for once, nearly silent, aside from the data feed at the center of the large, circular table. A communications tech continued to give his report to the gathered contingent of Kromus military commanders, thirteen of the most senior personnel outside of High Command itself. High Command, it seemed, had been captured in a disastrous ambush over and on the distant world of Tallon IV. In truth, though, none of the commanders were troubled by that. They'd expected that remaining close to the dragonoid, Ridley, would bring all those that chose to do so to a bad end sooner or later. The Fall of Krom had shown them all that much.
"A pity the lizard took his ship with him," Vargok growled idly, finally breaking the collective hush. "The Cunning Death would have proven most useful for what we have planned. Silence fell again, but only for a moment, and a murmur of low chuckles, or what passed as such among the various subspecies of Kromus, rippled through the chamber. At a wave of a claw, the feed shut off, and Vargok, the de facto chairman gestured towards a dark-hued Fro'my'xin whose skin seemed to ripple with color, as if trying to break up his outline. "What do we know?" Vargok asked.
"The Confederation is celebrating it's victory over the enslaver, and well fought, I should think. The Federation grows lax, though, and they believe this victory is theirs, as well, despite not having sent any force worthy even of being called such. The Divolu, in particular, grow fat and lazy," Mordul explained with a mixture of excitement and disdain.
"Even so, they have a large fleet, and if they are not silenced swiftly, they will raise their defenses in full, and no doubt the Sangheili will seek battle when we are slowed," another of the Fleet Admirals hissed softly, a particularly calculating Urtraghan called Hokulk.
"We all know this, Hokulk," Vargok replied. "And I believe we have an answer to that issue."
"Oh? Elaborate, then," Hokulk bade, curiosity sharp in his gaze.
"We have the numbers to strike and strike hard. We shall stage our forces in a staggered line behind Pradaxa Negus's gas giants, where their bulks will hide our Slipspace transitions. When we are ready, we will feign a raid on their outer colonies in that system and drawn forth their navy," the Kromun commander began with a wicked smile.
"And we will jump in force behind their defenses and raze their homeworld," Hokulk realized.
"Just so. We will land forces, though, for there is much information we can garner if we act swiftly enough," Mordul elaborated. "I believe Draknash has something that will buy us additional time, as well."
Twelve sets of eyes turned towards the vicious-looked Qymor, though it was well-known that he was remarkably calm, even gentle for his kind. That did not, however, mean that he held any compunctions with developing all manner of horrific weapons, and his knack for engineering bioweapons was a growing legend that suggested that, had he been alive during their first war, the Terrans would have been too ravaged by biological horrors to ever strike out at Krom. "It is as Mordul says," the military scientist confirmed. "We shall strike at Daiban with ten thousand troop ships," he declared with his customary calm, relishing the silent anticipation of his colleagues. They knew far too well that if Draknash suggested something that seemed unlikely to work at all, then there was a twist to it that meant that victory was certain. "Troop ships only. Automated, and carrying an assortment of antimatter mines, plasma bombs, and pressurized cases of a most wondrous protozoa called asteroidia merozoite. It is quite deadly, and it is far too virulent to be cured. Only those so fortunate to possess a rather unique mutation in their genetics have ever been recorded as surviving. Granted, only humans and Kig-Yar have been recorded to have contracted it, but there's enough humans on Daiban that the chaos that follows can benefit us, quite apart from the devastation that will surely result from the bombs themselves."
None said anything for a span of heartbeats, weighing the magnitude of the plans that had been unveiled. It was the boldest move that had yet been made in the war, or in the one before. A war that would make clear to the Galactic Federation that they were in the galaxy to stay, and surrender would happen only on their terms.
"If there are no further questions, does anyone have objections to these plans?" Vorgak said at last. No one said a word, and it was clear in the expressions and body language of every single Kromus present that they fully supported what had been proposed. They would burn Pradaxa Negus to glass, and put Daiban to the flame to see it done. The true war was finally begun.
