Eliza studied the helmet assembly with interest, noting how different segments fit into place over a head that was less than ideally shaped for full-coverage helmets. For her, it was a matter of curiosity, and she made no attempts to hide her interest in the decidedly more complex design Eresh wore compared to Eliza's far simpler helmet made for a human head. Even so, she said nothing on the matter. Indeed, she was silent for the next several minutes, waiting until the Skimmer was well underway before she spoke again.
"What orders did ye take issue wi?" Eliza asked at last. She was reasonably certain she had his measure, but there were still a few remaining unknowns, she knew. Allowing an outsider to know her secrets was a risky matter, and soon enough, he'd know more than simply her word of what she was.
That interest wasn’t lost on him, and after a few minutes of riding after their break he decided to play a bit. “So, how do I look? I couldn’t help but notice how you were staring at me- I’m quite flattered all things considered.” He said with a chuff, before answering her questions
“It’s not a very interesting story to be honest. I simply didn’t agree with the way a certain—“ he then stopped mid-sentence and then killed the skimmer, sliding behind a trio of trees. “Did you see that?” Eresh abruptly asked, scanning the trees to their east.

Eliza started to explain that she had merely been observing how his helmet fit together over his more complex features, but all thoughts of their conversation died when he spoke again, diverting her attention ahead. Nothing showed on her motion tracker, but that could easily have been explained by the distance. Motion trackers were unreliable beyond 25 meters, even in ideal circumstances, as too much interference would overload the sensors that allowed the motion tracker to function. A brief toggle to thermal imaging, however, confirmed her suspicions.
"Scouts. Minimum five. Likely three more not yet spotted," she reported quietly as she dismounted the Skimmer with barely a whisper of sound. Flank right, I'll take left. Stay ahead of th' patrol ta avoid friendly fire." As she spoke, Eliza reactivated her armors photo reactive panels, then crept off into the undergrowth until she vanished in the shadows.
"Copy. Try to keep out of direct line of sight with them, I'd like to keep the fear of the woods in these things." He said to her as he took the right flank, making his way through the brush as quietly as he could manage. While he lacked a stealth system for his armor, he was thankful that his suit's natural coloration worked as serviceable camouflage as he slipped between the trees while getting into position. Sure enough, it only was a handful of minutes before he could hear the gutteral chatter of the scouts as they patrolled, and the Chozo warrior felt his fingers tighten around his weapon just a little harder as he then made visual contact with the group. He had numerous encounters with the pirates at this point.. but no matter how many times he faced them, that anger he had towards the aliens didn't seem to recede at all.
"In position, eyes on target. Waiting on your cue, miss Lockheed." Eresh quietly said over his comm, one of the Kromus heads in his sights.

Eliza stalked silently forward through the foliage, moving with such careful ease that even the few leaves she rustled seemed more like that of a passing breeze. After a dozen or so meters, she settled in, then drew her paired sidearms and took aim through the undergrowth, taking a breath to calm herself. It was far from her first ambush, but she typically had more information to go on before she did such things, and unlike humans or the Illumidas, Kromus were significantly stronger than she was. She could not afford any slip-ups. A faint smile bent her lips upward, though, as she realized the Kromus had no idea they were present.
"Engage," she said over the comms, as if she were ordering a Slipspace jump, and fired once from each of her MARS, then a second time. Four shots, each intended for a different target. Kromus were tough, to be sure, but a 20 gram tungsten slug moving in excess of Mach 3 carried more than enough power to punch through their chitinous hide. Though quieter than conventional firearms, the crack of slugs breaking the sound barrier was still quite conspicuous, and Eliza immediately began scanning her surroundings for any other Kromus, ideally before they figured out where she was.
Once the firing from the flank that Lockheed had taken started, Eresh then took action. Her prediction that there were three other scouts had proven correct, and as they came rushing to aid their confused, panicked brethren he would lean from his hiding place and pop one Kromu, then the second before then ducking away.. reappearing three trees away and catching the third in its upper chest and head with two more shots.
The final Kromus would attempt to flee, seeing how quickly its comrades were dispatched and Eresh, from the cover of another tree quite conversationally addressed Eliza
++”Shall I do the honors, or do you want the last one?”++

Eliza smirked as she held up her left arm towards Eresh, then took aim with the weapon in her right hand, intending to cripple the Kromus's movements. A single shot, and a 20 gram slug of ferric tungsten tore through the unfortunate creature's calf, sending it tumbling. Lovely, Eliza thought as she holstered her guns, then removed her helmet. She gave no explanation for this act, but instead began to chant softly, until an inexplicable dense fog formed around them.
"You should not be here, Scion of Krom," Eliza called through the mists, even as she used her hair, the preferred conduit of so much of her magic, to restrain and lift the downed Kromus. Her words were shown in GalFed Standard, though the accent was Ylf'in, and with her features, she might have been mistaken for one. "You will leave, never to return, or Ylf'yna will gnaw upon your bones. Leave, interloper. Leave or face damnation," she warned, then launched the Kromus away back the way the patrol had come. Once the Kromus was no longer in vision range, Eliza retracted her hair and donned her helmet once more.
"Let's see where this one leads us, shall we?" Eliza suggested to her companion a moment later, as if nothing strange at all had occurred.
Eresh was about to comment that her shot wasn’t a kill shot, but it stalled in his throat as he beheld what happened next. On one hand, he recognized this as sorcery, but he had never seen a being use their hair as a conduit for their magical powers.. and he found himself covertly recording the event. Whatever this magic was, it was new to him and deserved documentation. Once that was done and she flung the pirate away, he tilt his head.
“Huh. Interesting. Right, let’s follow the beast.” The Chozo replied, equally casually.

Eliza grinned smugly at her work, as well as Eresh's reaction to it, and glanced back towards the Skimmer. "If we follow wi th' Skimmer, he'll know th' game, and might chose ta deny us. Best we secure it and get anythin' off it we want," she advised. "Here's hopin' we donna end up needin' it later," the Witch added dryly as she started back towards the vehicle. "Ye have a camo net ta hide this wi?" Eliza asked idly as she began retrieving spare munitions and fitting them into the hardcase mounted on her backplate. A few moments passed, then she gave a soft chuckle. "Ye thought I missed that last shot, dinna ye? I caught that nixed response," she teased. "Plus I kinda expected that, Soldier Bird."
Eresh would follow her back to the skimmer, reaching into one of its saddle bags to pull out a mottled tarp. “Not much, but better than nothing.” He said as he unfolded it and draped it over the machine. It was clearly local, for if she hadn’t seen him place the tarp.. from a distance it would be very difficult to discern from the surrounding shrubbery. “I will say this, the people of this world have an eye for detail.”
Once covered, the Mawkin would tilt his head at her question. “Like I said, I’ve seen sorcery a time or two. It would be foolish to assume that you didn’t do it for a purpose.”

"Th' Yl'fin take pride in their craftsmanship. If they were half as numerous as humanity, I'll wager they'd be a major player in th' Spur, but fact of th' matter is, they generally like their quiet. Probably why there's no GalFed fleet rollin' up on our guests," Eliza explained as she finished stowing the last of the spare grenades on a retaining slot in her chestplate. "I'd love ta ask more about yer experience wi magic, but I think that'll need ta wait. I'll take point, aye?" Despite the tone of a question, the shorter woman didn't actually wait for a reply, and was already advancing into the forest, keeping the wounded Kromus marked on her HUD while remaining alert for any others, should they be led into some manner of counterambush.
"I see, I'll take your word for it." he conceded as he began to follow behind her as she took point, adding: "There isn't much to tell, to be perfectly honest. My past experiences with magic were wholly negative and I'd prefer to leave it at that for now. I simply understand that magic isn't all bad- theoretically. I'll have to see more before I pass judgement on yours."
That last bit seemed to be a joke, though it wasn't entirely clear if that was the case. Either way, he would dutifully take up the rear, keeping her in sight at all times as they continued into the Forest.

Eliza arched an eyebrow, intrigued by what stories could be beneath his vague words, but filed it away for later. It was best to let it be for the time being, as it wasn't especially relevant to the mission at hand. To her surprise, she began detecting heat signatures after only a few miles more of travel, though she supposed that made sense. A foot patrol wouldn't have ranged especially far ahead of the main body, after all, though the numbers gave her pause. It had to be at least two full companies worth of Kromus, soldiers, not mere pirates, even if they were an occupational garrison, and not an assault unit.
Not wishing to have any comms traffic detected, Eliza cautiously doubled back towards Eresh, then spoke through her external speakers, keeping the volume to a bare minimum. "Looks like near ta 400 Kromus. Ye have any mines?" she asked. "We're gannin ta need ta be very creative, my feathered friend. At least, if we wish ta break this speartip and na die ourselves. They'll be on guard thanks ta gimpy, but they donna know how many of us there actually are. If we can avoid detection, I say wait until nightfall, then set mines along their perimeter, full encirclement if we have enough. Let them start their movement wi chaos and death, then tail them and pick off targets of opportunity. Suggestions, comments, questions, or concerns?"
Eresh waited for the half-human to return, and when she did? The news she brought back caused him to hiss softly In consternation. On one hand, this wasn’t unexpected: The Kromus had seemingly been attempting to converge together for a few days now in a few places..likely gearing up to make a concentrated push into the Forest. On the other.. this was a great opportunity to deal a crippling blow to the pirates, while they were still mustering.
“Explosives are a risk to the trees, I’d advise that if you wish to use them, they should be used in a way that doesn’t cause too much collateral.”

"Wi jist th' two of us, ta na use explosives- assumin' we have any- only increases our chances of failure," Eliza pointed out. "I've got some grenades, but I dinna pack anythin' bigger than that," she explained, then let out a sigh as she realized what would likely be needed. "We're gannin ta need ta guide them away fram th' Guard until their numbers are cut down. Ye know anythin' about kitin'?" she asked
